Do you sing and play fretless bass at the same time? Enquiring minds want to know…

Imo singing and playing bass or rhythm guitar is like juggling two balls. With the attention a fretless requires you’re adding one or two more!

Nice guitar.

I spent about a year playing/practicing fretless and the best I ever got out at it was 'adequate'. I could play it with intonation, but couldn't really figure out how to really USE the fretless aspect, so I went back to my frets.

Singing and playing fretless.. I've had it happen a few times well enough to give me hope. I can do it on songs with a strong melody and strong bassline in keys friendly to both. Basically a cool party trick. Night after night in random keys 100 songs a night, some of which don't have strongly pitched melodies.... forget about it.

I love that body shape. Have configurationalized many on the web. Their build quality is very good too. I’ve played a Jake that was perfectly built.

You’re a better man than I am, Gunga Din!
Nah. It’s the same. People get in their heads about it. It’s the same notes. If you can sing and play a guitar or fretted bass it’s the same. I think in a band context your brain takes over and starts to automate the intonation.

I’ve been thinking about this. See, I’ve wanted to play fretless bass since I heard Floyd’s Hey You. But the only experience I’ve had with a fretless instrument is a fiddle. And they are very finicky…a little pressure changes the pitch a lot. But now (thank you Killing Floor) I’m thinking that the string length is so much longer that (literally) there’s a lot more wiggle room to play on pitch.

Glissando is your friend. You’re never sharp or flat, you’re just sliding!
Seriously, a “flat” landing on frets makes a buzz. On fretless you can recover nicely with vibrato. Violin was my first instrument. Don’t be intimidated.
