Poked around the used gear spots this afternoon and came home with this adorable Vox AC10C1 and a Peavey 112 cabinet with a 100W Scumback. The gain pot is a little scratchy and the speaker cab is 1/8" deep in Armor All but man the sound is there. I'd been hankering for some tea and biscuits since early April when I spent a day with an Orange Dual Terror through a Greenback. This rig sounds nothing like that one but just as good.

Not bad for a hybrid amp.

How is an AC10 a hybrid amp? Because it has a couple of op-amps in it? So do many tubed Marshalls and many others, and no one calls them "hybrids".

Hi Doug, your use of the quotes around the word tells me you believe it is pejorative. I can't say I'm with you on that. My own bar for calling an amp a hybrid is the presence of a solid state gain stage, of which the AC10C1 has 2, apart from the reverb. If an op amp is used as a switch or a follower or to drive a loop then I see no reason to call it a hybrid. Regarding the Marshalls you've mentioned, I'm not familiar with those circuits.

Thank you both! I've had it dimed already.

The Marshall Hi Gain Dual Reverb is a hybrid, imho.

Congrats on enjoying what you enjoy, MexiTele.

I’ve been eyeing these for a while! The Vox amps just cut through the mix in a live setting so nicely. Congratulations!

Vox calls the amp "all-tube" (notice the quotes) because of the presence of a tube in the preamp and a tube in the power amp.

The classic top boost circuit (which the AC10C1 is supposed to contain) used 3 tube sections in the preamp (needs two preamp tubes), one preamp tube for the phase inverter and the push-pull power tubes.

In order to save a little cash, Vox replaced the first tube section on the classic top boost channel with a High-Voltage MOSFET Transistor. Another Transistor is added after the reverb as a recovery stage.

As Mexi Blues pointed out, there is a solid state component providing amplification and therefore it is a not a pure tube amp - would this not be considered a Hybrid?

I know a lot of people were duped by Vox and many people are in denial or angry about this, but it does not change the fact that this amp is not 100% tube - The AC4C1, however, is impressively all-tube!

Often builders of classic vox top boost circuits will ditch the cathode follower in the circuit to save that "wasted" tube section. This was done in the AC15CC1. Why Vox kept the cathode follower and ditched what it usually regarded as the most important tube section in the entire amplifier is a mystery. o_O

I have an AC10C1. It sounds great. I don't think or care about the MOSFETS and the digital reverb is pretty good. Use your ears instead of preconceptions.

Thanks guys, had a blast playing it last night. It sounds great through the stock speaker but the Scumback makes it come alive.

Great explanation, Gus. I wonder why they didn't use a 12AX7 triode for the input stage and the mosfet for the cathode follower position.

I was pleasantly surprised by the reverb. It sounds like digital spring type, and better than my old Blues Jr which was real spring.

Have you compared the speakers at all?

I quite like the Vox VX10 in my AC4C1-BL. The AC10C1 uses the same speaker.

Is this scumback a ceramic implementation of the Celestion Alnico Blue?

The amp sounds great through the stock speaker, but plugging into the scumback is a different ballgame. It is a modern recreation of a vintage G12 Celestion. From their site:

H75 Series --> G12H30 T1217 Pre Rola 75hz (bass response) lead cone, using the 102 003 Pulsonic cone. These speakers had a 50 oz magnet which made them louder, produce more bass and treble, with a flatter midrange response. These came out in mid 66, following the mid 65 introduction of the G12M. They appeared in the Marshall 100 logo cabs most often, and were offered in the lead cone version, and the bass cone version. This version has more lower mids, and creamier treble than the original models. Offered with 30, 65 and 100 watts of power handling.
