I had been shopping around for quite a while looking for a black face style amp. I narrowed it down to something based on a Deluxe. I didn't want a combo - I wanted a head. I looked at a bunch of amps including Allen, Louis Electric, Lil' Dawg as well as vintage Fenders. I decided on the Lil' Dawg for a number of reasons. It had all of the features I wanted, it got great reviews, the audio clips sounded great and the price was excellent.

Dealing with Jim from Lil' Dawg was a pleasure. We spoke at length a couple of times and he was a great source of info. I decided on the 25 watt version with 6L6GC power tubes. Jim sent regular email updates with photos as the build progressed. I received my amp today - very well packed. I've only been playing through it for a couple of hours now, but it is a clear winner! I couldn't be happier with my choice. It is pure black face tone. Quiet as can be and I'm plugged in with my Stratocaster. No hum or buzz at all! I'm playing through a 1x12 with a Celestion Creamback H. It really does sound glorious.

Many congratulations! What a great amp! As you said, Jim is top-notch. You can't go wrong dealing with him. So glad you got an amp you love. And thanks for sharing all the progress pics. Very cool that he sent you those.

Looks beautiful! I'm curious, how do you arrive at 25W with push-pull 6L6GCs and fixed bias? Is that figure calculated or measured? Thanks!

I have no idea. I asked for 6L6Gc's and 25 watts. Jim did the rest! :D

I'm jealous too. I've been wanting one for two years and everytime I get a few extra bucks saved up some expensive car or house repair comes up. If I could only talk Jim into selling through Sweetwater so I could get 48 month financing. Jim is great to work with and his customer service can't be beat. I have a Dawg Deluxe and a Vintage Sound 15 but would really like a WD for increased clean headroom and a different voicing. I know you haven't had much time with it but how is the clean headroom and how much of an effect does the mini toggle have. Is it really like have a Deluxe and Super in the same amp?

I'm thinking of selling off my Fender amps to get a Wonder Dawg. Your post is pushing me in that direction. I'd get the combo with no speaker and stick an old Altec Lansing speaker I have in it.

This is such a clever design - in a simple way. No second channel, no tremolo, mid control.

The little mini toggle switch has quite an effect on the tone. Deeper, bolder sound when switched to the up (Super) position - sounds like a bit of a volume bump as well. It's hard to compare to a Fender Deluxe and Super without having those amps sitting here with me but from memory, I think the WonderDawg hits the mark on both of them. I'm very happy with the headroom. With a Stratocaster, it stays pretty clean up to about 4.5 - 5. Humbuckers, about 3 - 4. Very "touch sensitive" too. I can't say enough about this amp. It really is better than I expected! I have two Germino amps (Classic 45 and Lead 35) that ooze quality and that Marshall tone. For me, the WonderDawg is my Fender equivalent - it just oozes quality and that Fender black face tone!

I didn't get the Mercury Magnetics option. I went with the base build - 25 watts, 6L6GC tubes.

I got the head version, so I'm playing it through an Avatar Traditional 1x12 cabinet with an 8 ohm Celestion Creamback H.

Thanks man. I like the mid knob as well. I talked to Jim and we both agree it allows you some tweed vibe. When I'm able to order im gonna have Jim dial in some extra clean headroom on mine. Might even go for a 50 watt transformer.
