Congrats! I have a JCM-900 4100 "5881" that is a fantastic amp. I know the Marshall purists are always down on the 900's and especially if they have the 5881 tubes, but they're fantastic, versatile amps.

Some folks suggest that jumpering the effects loop provides tonal benefits on this amp, I'm not sure I ever noticed a huge difference. Might be something worth screwing around with.

This is somewhat true... it's not using transistors for the preamp or anything like that, but it has diode-clipping before the tube preamp, which is where the complaints arise from. If someone is really ambitious here's the mod to remove the diode-clipping: http://www.sgravenmade.nl/onderhoud/marshall-jcm900-dual-reverb-mod/

Personally I haven't noticed it being a problem, but I'm not playing super-high gain stuff, which I think is where people start complaining that the distortion gets a little frizzy.

I had a buddy who used to use a 4100 head with an SG and 1960A cab in a cowpunk band back in the 90s. It was a cool amp.

Another friend had a couple of the 50-watt versions and they were cool too.

    Kerr-runch!

Thankfully I learned to ignore tone purists a long time ago in favor of liking what I like. ;) And thank you! I haven't had a chance to really crank it much(and probably won't for a while until one of my bands records) but I'm really taken with it.

They probably won't come home if he cranks it as it's supposed to.

Cow 1: "Nah...I'd better stay out here in the fields"
Cow 2: "I'm totally with you, man!"

Of course, Cow 2 has no real understanding of gender.

Probably already been asked but how many grandmothers have a Marshall JCM900 in their garage? Was she a shredder?

Nice it was given or passed on to you by Grandma in law!

Sad that she outlived her two sons though.

Mine sounds amazing. It's the 50w Combo. There are mods you can do to these to make the sound better.

Mine loves Celestion G12-65 speakers the best. 16038435421057703652727436553293.jpg

She actually just droptuned. Grandma knows what's up.

Nah, it actually belonged to one of her late sons, my partner's uncle, before it passed to grandma, and now to me.

I'll pass no judgment on her son whose amp this was, because I never got to meet the guy, except to say it's always a bummer when you hear about a guy who was talented and squandered it. His mom clearly loved him though, so that says a lot.

Her other son, my partner's father, was a Foo Fighters and BOC-obsessed engineer with a love of P90-equipped guitars. I'm told we would have gotten along very well, and I like to think that would've been the case. Cancer sucks.
