Found a Silverface Vibrolux Reverb posted on Craigslist for $700 from a guy in Southern OH. I was attracted to the "tail" on the Fender logo, which meant it was an early 70s model. I could also tell it was well used and needed a lot of cleaning. Inspired by Skip Simmons' Vintage Amps podcast, I went for the project.

When I arrived, the amp stunk of cigarettes and was very dirty, but fired up and sounded terrific. Turns out the original owner recently died. His brother, who was emptying out the house and selling his brother's gear, said he had lived a fast life, and this amp showed it. He knew it was likely a cheap price tag, but just wanted to move it to someone who would use it. That's where I come in. Because I didn't try to heckle him down, the brother even threw in an emptied 80s Fender Super60 cabinet with original blue sticker speaker.

After taking it home and cleaning it up, I found a few small issues:
    • All but one of the original tubes were in working order (I happened to have a spare 12at7)
    • 1 of the original Oxford's had a noisy tear
    • There was some output fluctuation (NOT the trem!)
    • I could see some leaky capacitors
    • The original owner had taken off the grounding prong, bc his house lacked grounded outputs
A local tech biased and installed 5 new filter caps for $80. I bought 2 new Eminence Legend 10" speakers, a new RCA cable for the reverb tank, and a grounded plug head.

+/- $850 all spent, I'd say this was a victory.

A VR is a beautiful thing. Fender cleans at usable volumes, doesn’t weigh a ton, and enough power to hurt you. I miss my BFVR.

Very cool! Now get a new tech...

There's 5 filter caps, plus the bias supply cap, but a few bypass caps on the board that need to go. That price is amazing though, and VR's are my favorite Fender.

    Good deal!
BTW, is the cab speaker baffle screwed in or the later SF style? The grill cloth looks like BF style as is the logo.

Nice amp. That is original blue stripe SF era cloth, imho. +1 on dealing with all filter caps and the bias cap/s. Incomplete work ime. But hey....it was inexpensive, right? He is not looking to make a living at it.

Nice find, fellow Columbus person! Who did the work on your new amp? I'm looking for someone to work on my '64 PR.

    Thanks!

I saw one at the HOLLYWOOD GC a few years ago for next to nothing. Unfortunately at that time I had nothing so no go. I still have nightmares about that day...

I ran into two VRs in one of the Dallas GCs a few years back. They maxed out at around 5 on the Volume dial and just stayed fuzzy after that. Sorely in need of filter caps and over $1k. You did well.

Best guitar sound I ever heard was a Tele into a Silverface Vibrolux.

    You are a winner.

Congrats, a very nice amp and at a great price.

I’m a previous owner of two BF and two SF Vibrolux Reverbs.

A Vibrolux Reverb is one of the best looking Fender amps. It is also, one of the best sounding Fender amps that I’ve owned.

Get your VR fully serviced and you have a life-time amp it you want it.

    Enjoy.

Cool! It cleaned up real nice. Oooh, so a Vibrolux with Legends…is it loud enough?
