@jondanger I know the annoying stuff you mention but we do our best to steer, will kick a kid out of the house for a period if appropriate, and on overall we're not seeing much if any damage from it.

We get some pleasant surprises from their YouTube watching - stuff like they actually learn something and the moments when they think their parents' YouTube watching is just as silly or annoying.

I keep a pouch of Drum in the house but I probably smoke less than two cigs a week. And always after everyone else has gone to bed

That sucks, there are already way too many ads. It isnt even worth watching anymore. I especially cant stand the double commercials at the beginning of a video that I dont even know if I want to watch yet, you gotta start watching it to know if you want to continue, there's a lot of crappy videos out there and I dont like having to sit through commercials just to find out the video is useless. Automatic "thumbs down" when that happens.

Every 8 year old knows how to browse anonymously, my friend. If you don't install serious parent filters on ALL your devices, your kids look at whatever they want to.

humanity evolved to be social. it's pretty hardwired into us and also part of why we're still around.

I only have a couple of problems with YouTube:
    1. Too many commercials
    2. The guys that take 20 minutes to explaine the "C" chord.
    3. Any video that runs more than 5 minutes.

Looking at the videos on the Youtube homepage (I never stay logged into google so my preferences or viewing tendencies aren't reflected on youtube, and I also switched to duckduckgo), I am amazed at the unbelievably moronic trash that, say, 30 or 40 MILLION people have allegedly viewed. It amazes me. I'm also amazed that people are paid to provide this "content". It's way worse than broadcast television ever was.
The production values are pretty outstanding though, and I appreciate that.

We spend a lot of time on YouTube. There’s a lot of content that I don’t get. I honestly believe a lot of the tension in the nation is based on the divide between American cultures/generations. There are lots of people that can’t/won’t use a computer and lots that do. That doesn’t just relate to technical savy but the lense Americans view themselves and the world. America and it’s culture are changing and I think YouTube has had a massive impact on that. Uh...the end.
