There's a lot to like about living in the woods back up in the hills.

As far as I'm aware, we don't hove HOAs over here, at least not as described.
By the sounds of it, 'members' pay an annual fee and don't seem to get much for it.
Pretty sure that it's something I can do without.

We pay $660 a year and that annual bill and a couple of update emails is all I hear to from them. Our neighborhood is small, about 25 houses and my wife and I are just about the youngest couple. She’s 42 and I’m 58. No complaints here.

Sometimes HOA's serve their purpose. I sure as hell would not want to look out my front door and see this everyday....

Some friends moved into a really nice neighborhood with, as they later discovered, a HOA from hell.
    The rules were beyond oppressive.
They put in a satellite dish (‘82) and had to not only put up a 6’ fence but the dish’s mount had to be sunken so the dish was not visible to any of the neighbors.

I went over one day (just after noon) and drove in with my work vehicle. Parked on the street and not 15 minutes later there was a knock on the door telling the owners I couldn’t have my vehicle on the street. My vehicle could be parked in their driveway but only from 10am to 4:00pm. After 4:00pm I had to be either in their garage or off property.

In my community the streets are narrow, many of them have culverts running down one or both sides and there are no street lights. I think not allowing overnight on street parking is a reasonable safety consideration.

HOA 's are control freaks. Always a Condo Commando lurking in the bushes.

I just wish California/Colorado would keep it's nutty ideas like HOAs and roundabouts to itself :)

the best part is that apparently when they arrested him he gave his name as "john coltrane" and the cop didn't even bat an eye.

We have stratas in North America, too. My wife's office building is run by a strata with five businesses as members. They have been arguing over how to share the parking lot for several years now, and my wife's office has spent tens of thousands of dollars on the fight with no results and no end in sight. Crazy. The trouble is, two of the strata members are narcissists and set each other off. And they can't be removed because they are the owners of their businesses.

And in terms of condo living the fees collected should cover any collateral damages done to surrounding properties

    Why not?
In what way can simply seeing that possibly affect you?

We just got our offer accepted on a place with monthly HOA dues higher than any yearly dues we've ever paid.

But it covers insurance, lawn care, complete maintenance of the home's exterior, and the facilities. Really if I add up all I spent on those things, it almost covers it.

Plus, it is in a prime location downtown.

Gonna be different than any place we've lived before ... except the apartment we are in now, which was the test to see if we'd like city living ... and we love it.

Maybe HOAs should start dictating that all residents in the neighborhood be slim

That's being silly ... but really being just as silly ... that'd be in the best interest of the residents.

That'd be an interesting selling point, to have a weight watchers built into the HOA.

Also it'd be a great premise for a horror movie.
