So I have a nocaster neck pickup that's been problematic. I installed it using a factory nocaster control plate (wired by Fender) but sounded really bright. I then wired up a stock 3 way set up using CRL switch and CTS 250K pots and still goofy bright. What gives? Jacked up pickup is my only guess. I bought this in a set and no longer have the bridge pickup so a return prolly wont work. Would fender give me a new one? I'm assuming that it's the pickup after same results with two good control set ups.

First thing, check your tone cap, if it's .022, there's your problem, should be .05 for best tone, will make it less bright. If you have an .05 tone cap, then I'd just try lowering it away from strings to smooth out the tone. What kind of guitar, woods do you have it in?

Lowering it down should help, and try it having the low E side about 1/8 " higher than the low e.

That cap won't make any difference with the tone wide open.

Just for kicks take a resistance reading. I don't know if that will mean much be it should be about 7.2, 7.3 KΩ

Yep, lower it. That's a great sounding neck pickup.

The tone cap won't make a difference when the knob is on 10. The cap value is only effective in contouring the sweep of the tone control.
