Yeah, I wasn't smart enough to realize I'd "kicked a hornet's nest" a few months ago when I asked why some people like artificially "relic'd" guitars----yikes, my bad! They closed that thread pretty fast...

Look what the pros use. Then we'll discuss which is better. It really depends on what your playing. If you prefer metal. Then tubes usually aren't for you. There are those metal heads still using tubes. And if thats what they like. Stick with what works for you. I just feel tubes give you a sound technology has not yet mimic'd. And thats from a guy who went from solid state to all tube boutique.

It hasn't been closed because nobody is really doing anything to upset anybody. We have to understand, there are lots more people reading this thing than just a bunch of hack pickers and semi-paid players. There are also lots of future hack pickers and semi-paid players who will be needing to learn to listen to bad advice for many years to come.

Tubes for playing loud. Solid state modelling for low volume stuff.

I've been building my own audio/stereo tube amps for some time now.
    Here's the.....formula:

    1) Wait until dark then turn it on.
    2) Put on an old Beatles, Stones, Janis Joplin, etc. CD.
    3) Crack open a cold beer (Dos XXX, Tecate, Bass Ale).
    4) Enjoy the moment, while your musical nightlights glow in the background. :D

    Which pros?

    Jonny Greenwood
    Johnny Marr
    Santana
    John Fogerty
    BB King
    Joe Strummer
    Robben Ford
    George Benson
    Robert Fripp
    Metallica
    Buddy Guy

Pros use whatever works for them. Or whatever they like that they happen to get paid to use.

    Let's take a look at this;

Two weeks ago, you were bashing Mustangs left and right, made some comment that your friend had one and you didn't like it.

Now you're saying you OWN a Mustang V head ?
So you just sorta forgot you owned one 2 weeks ago, or
you bashed them 2 weeks ago so you went out and bought one?

    Could happen.

Let's see if I've got this straight.

You didn't like your friend's Mustang so you ran out and bought one and
    now you are bashing it.

Wher'm I going wrong? I'm sorry to sound so critical of this.
    I'm really not, just confused.

Well.......as we digress, hopefully our good friends up the latter can close the thread... :)

Maybe we can end this on a positive note. Here we have a Merle Haggard fan
who quotes Psalms 33:3 for his signature. You are a man of integrity and I'm sorry you've been subjected to this.

There's better Rainbow Stew to be found. :)

"Sing unto Him a new song; Play skilfully with a loud noise"

Never said it had to have tubes.......

Man, it is amazing to me how certain thread topics can fire up this forum. The right fuel can make some of the nicest people I've met online quite fiendish.

Next time the OP should mention the music of John Mayer and Nickelback, JHS pedals, Freakish Blues, Pointy head stocks vs Teles and top it off with a nod toward death metal shredders being solid state, Crate fans and political hate speech enthusiasts.

What about '80s analog solidstate snobs?

    :p

Because I quite enjoy my SS amp made in '80s.
I'm not quite convinced that I want amps using lightbulbs for power - and I don't want ALL my time to go into playing with software, however well hidden under some knobs.

I am saying this mainly because I wanted to have a go at using smilies :p

I think the notes one plays through the amplifier are more important than the amplifier.
