I had a very nice G&L Comanche tribute that was really nice sounding, and playing, but I sort of finally realized why I have so many one pickup guitars. I don't have the love for too many bells and whistles and the Comanche had too many tone options for my limited abilities, so I decided to sell it. I happened to talk to my brother, and he was planning on selling his G&L ASAT tribute Bluesboy, so I suggested a trade. He came over a few weekends ago and a swap was done.
I had a USA ASAT Classic years ago and never really bonded with the pickups and that was the same with this tribute series Bluesboy. The bridge PU was too spikey for me and the neck HB'r was muddy as all heck. So I hit up GFS for some inexpensive PU options and settled on an alnico fatbody with oversized pole pieces for the bridge and surf 90 Dearmond type for the neck. What a total change!! Here's a before and after:
I left the Mighty Mite 250K pots in and tried to wire the tone control for the bridge only but with the Cor-Tek Asian made switch you can't do that. You need a CLR USA type to do that so basically in the middle position the tone works for both, but in the neck only selection the neck PU is off the tone control.
I added the amp type knobs I had from a Squier I modded years ago and now have a very nice sounding and playing G&L. The Surf 90 I can't recommend enough. It's beefy and has a very single coil sparkle. The bridge P/U is pretty good too, but the middle selection with both on at the same time is VERY cool!
Anybody else here have a good story about getting a nice guitar and think, "I can make that better!"?
