Marshall 6101LM (6L6GC Power Valves) and 6101 (EL34 Power Valves)

Just got them both back from recap and refurb.
Last night I started to compare them, I set all the switches and pots to the same points.
They do not sound the same set that way so after a bit of fiddling I got them to sound closer but the LM is still much darker sounding.
The 6101LM sounds like it's under a blanket, which is actually nice because it takes some of the raspy edge off of some of OD tones but I still need to find out how to "wake it up" for the clean tones.
This same demo was done "clean" with no reverb and it sounded the same so the reverb isn't being a tone suck.
Next more EQ play, then run both heads thru the same speaker, then might take all (7) 12AX7 tubes and swap them... . . .
Any other ideas on how to open up the LM?

The Marshall 6101 is the combo version of the 30th Anniversary Marshall 6100 from 1992.
Both have been recapped and checked out by Pete's Midi service in Maine.

I repaired a Blackface Bassman. The owner bought new TAD short bottle 6L6 for it. For testing I used my shop tubes, Ruby 6L6GCBSTR. By coincidence the two sets had the same %MPD. The Tad sounded like your 6101LM. The Ruby sounded like your 6101. Night and day difference.

I can't say this is the difference with your amps. It is possible though.

Not sure what 12AX7s ended up where since each needs 7.
I plan on doing a direct swap between the two this week and will report back

Hummm, would be an expensive test (4) 6L6GTs to swap out but might be a possibility after I try everything else.
