I picked up my Pete Anderson acoustic yesterday to find a piece of binding is MISSING!

I wrote to Larrivee and they said, "oh man, we don't use that kind of binding anymore"

I am not that picky about what it is made of (the old one looks like ivoroid) I just want a piece for the spot... what should I buy? I just want to glue it in and plunk... not wanting to spend a bunch of time on it...

    thoughts?

Have a look for binding on ebay and there might be something similar.
The majority is abs but i think I have seen ivory looking binding with a grain look on it somewhere before.

Recommending something sight unseen would not be as good as finding out from Larivee the material they used. It would be a much better match.

It just looks like black binding in the pics. Abs black would probably not stand out too much.
You could level sand it with 400 after gluing on and melting/ blending both end joins and coat it with tru oil.
Then finish it off with micromesh to match the sheen on the surrounding finish.

If there is a ivory grain look on the binding you might be able to match it by using a coarse sand paper to simulate the grain on the new abs black before applying finish.

nah.. it is like plastic or ivoroid stained black... weird! I don't actually care what it looks like, I just don't dig the fret jabbing me... I guess I'll order some pieces and see what I can get to fit... I just emptied out the vacuum cleaner and searched it... and under the couch etc.. no love.. oh well..

There are a number for sources that you can tap into .
RC Tonewoods , LMI , Stew Mac , eBay ..... A local luthier may have a short piece lying about that is unusable for anything but repair/s .
Whatever you decide to use , be sure to remove all residual adhesive and have bare wood .

Can you tell us about your flyswatter? Vintage? Reissue? Modern?

Ouch. I thought it was on the body.

Shouldn't be hard to fix. I'd square up that one edge, and go easy on the glue. Don't know what the finish is, but if it's nitro any solvent-based binding glue could make a huge mess.

    But you knew that.

thanks man... we tore the whole area apart near the guitar hoping to find the piece... but nope.. I ordered some... the larrivee guy just emailed me.. he is 'trying' to be helpful... I am glad that I usually do my own repairs and fixes and builds... I think I have some binding at my wife's cousins (helped him finish a guitar for his daughter) but, I ordered some anyhoo. I will be careful with the glue.

You can bet your cotton socks that the day after you have it patched the original section will somehow magically appear!

Did you look in the vacuum cleaner?

...pretty weird to have binding along the fretboard just fall off, except maybe much older guitars.

Looks about like a 2" piece. And it doesn't look like any impact - maybe the binding material got stressed somewhere before it got attached or and maybe that little interval didn't get much glue? Kinda makes you wonder what else might just fall off...I've seen some older bound fretboards where the corners of the binding at the body end of the fretboard are flopping loose, but not broken. Crazy!
