When I got my first decent-paying job I bought a brand-new 1989 Guild D-50. I loved that guitar, but I sold it after I married my wife. Not because she made me, just because she had a 1976 Guild D-55 that sounded incredible. Some of you may remember Kenny Baker, who played fiddle for Bill Monroe for years. Kenny played my wife's Guild several times and said he LOVED it, which was big coming from Kenny considering it was not a Martin!

Had me a 1978 D-55NT for about 20 years. It was a splendid instrument. Unfortunately as I get older, I have trouble playing big necks, and this one was HUGE.

Sold it some years ago, but I don't feel sad, I managed to replace it with a nice Gibson!!

Wonderful story and wonderful guitar. It demonstrates that guitars are frequently more than just objects to their owners. There is something great when a guitar carries such an emotional attachment. Sometimes it's because it's a gift from a loving parent (like your dad). Sometimes it's because someone worked hard and saved to buy their dream guitar.
