My grandpa came and talked to my school when I was in first grade. I thought at the time he probably had some really cool war stories or something to tell. But instead he talked about taking a mule to school when it was cold. A different time.

A friend of ours spoke to my son’s fourth grade class on career day. He began to talk about his work but the class wanted to talk about the BMW convertible he drove up in.

When I was a kid in school I think in the eighth grade, they were going to show us a film about the birds and the bees, but someone snickered just as it got going, and they shut it off, and dismissed the class. I've always wondered about that film.

May have been me before my reincarnation

when I was in middle school they showed a film about the miracle of birth, I was already thinking it was gonna be funny and had a warning before hand, when the film started it showed all these little wiggly swimming guys and I let out a big “HA!”

I was placed at the back of the room, so far I couldn’t see

To this day I’m still not exactly sure what I saw although I have a pretty good idea

Will you at least please explain to us how it is you would walk to school, barefoot, in 3 feet of snow, uphill both ways?

Especially that uphill both ways part. I've seen my parents / grandparents old homes and school, and I just cannot figure that part out.

As a male teacher I taught sex ed, I mean Family Living, for many years to the sixth grade boys.

A week long event and every day blank index cards were distributed for them to write questions they were embarrassed to ask.

We often had to respond with, “That is one of the six topics we may not discuss in sixth grade. Ask your mom or dad.”

Big fun in the teacher’s team meeting.

My son skipped right over me on parents day when he was in grade school and went to my father. He came to class and talked about what it was like to be a whaler. (When he was a young man, whaling was still a very important industry in the Azores.)

When asked why he switched over to skipper a boat in the tuna fleet, he described the day his team harpooned a sperm whale and was pulling it along side the ship to start the processing of the carcass. While this was going on, he noticed a tiny whale swimming alongside the whale they had harpooned. The smaller whale refused to leave the carcass of the adult whale and kept nudging it to no avail. He soon realized the small whale was a juvenile and the whale they had killed was his or her mother. That very day, he quit the whaling fleet and transferred over to the tuna fleet. From that moment on, that mental imagery still haunted him.

The entire class broke down in tears. My son got a lot of hugs from the class. I, however, felt left out because my father had never told me about that day! Asked why and he told me that it was too difficult to recount when I was so young.
