Just back from our annual reunion in Chicago. Home of my nephew with a stone patio and pool out back. He owns an Austalian Shepherd named Bowie. Twenty nine people attended this year. Bowie was beloved by all and was running and jumping all over the place in 90 degree heat. He was having a ball and barking at people paying ball in the pool. Lots of fun. The next day he was limping. Went to vets and his poor pads were wore down from all the running and jumping. Got some salve, booties and meds to cool his jets. He is recovering nicely.
In order to provide Flash, my beloved black Lab, with some water time, starting last summer I've been taking him to a friend's pool. He came up lame once from "dock diving ", which he loves, but it was simple muscle soreness and thank goodness no dysplasia or spinal issue.
Border collie Ava doesn't like to swim (although she got in the tanning shelf up to her ankles last time. She can't stand for me to be in the water without her.) She runs around the pool with wet feet until her pads are raw unless I monitor her closely.
I haven't taken the new kid Buddy over there yet. I did, however, take him to a mobile vaccination outfit about a month ago. It was hot, and we sat in the truck awhile, but he was a perfect gentleman. Never barked once, was curious about other dogs but didn't approach any, and let several people pet him. I was pretty impressed. He's coming along.
