I'm doing the most basic mods to the little critter. Tubes, speaker, and grill clothe.

The amp is apart and I may start removing the grill clothe after work tonight.

    Ordered tubes and speaker today.

I like the basic sound of the amp but I want to get a rid of the tubbiness of the speaker and get a little sizzle going on.

This should be a fun and satisfying project. What speaker did you order?

I've always known that these amps have hidden potential, so this will be fun to follow.:)

    I'll post pics.

Probably won't be done until next weekend due to waiting on parts.

    IMG_0838.JPG C'mon UPS!

Heading to town for some suitable cloth to make a new grill. And get that Telecaster T shirt. And a haircut/beard trim. Shudder.

You know, when the speaker gets flabby sounding. Overloaded.

Speaker should be here today. Still haven't made it to the fabric store to pick a new material for the grill.

Hey 3fngrs, you are on the right track. I put a Tung Sol RI tube as a preamp & the 6V6. After trying many speakers, I settled on a Weber Alnico 6, and changed the grill cloth as well. It is great sounding 5 watt amp.

Good amps. But the jacks are crap. If they start to make noise don't lose faith, you can can easily get rid of the little printed circuit board and replace the two jacks with Switchcraft jacks (and a new volume pot if you want).

Alright. I really hope this goes well. That "tubbiness" is really a good description of what I could not get past when testing the 600s out. As if someone threw a blanket over the amp. The fabric that covers the speakers seemed to me to be the muffler, so this will be interesting to see.

Minor accident today. Chassis fell off my desk. Two and a half foot fall to carpet. I hope I didn't eff anything up. Fingers crossed

I didn't bother with the grill cloth. I put in the 6w" weber speaker and put in REAL NOS tubes. Huge face lift!

Today, hopefully, will be assembly day. I have a couple of fabrics to try for the grill cloth.

I need to find my aluminum tape so I can add some extra shielding.

Just waiting for the girlfriend to leave for work so I can clean up the kitchen, crack open a Pabst and get to work!
