So sorry for your loss and the grim discovery makes it even more traumatic. Our cat is an indoor cat. We debated the concept of making her indoor/outdoor but in the end we decided the perils are too great to let her outdoors. We try to be imaginative in creating virtual scenarios with toy mice and squiggly things for her to play out her predatory fantasies. Kinda like the way I play my guitar in the garage to the imaginary crowd.

Our two cats don't go outside without supervision. We have a six foot privacy fence that one cat will not jump, but the other one will be gone in ten seconds if allowed to.

They live sheltered, but good lives.

They are sixteen and fourteen years old.

There is a reason for their longevity in our world of cars, free-running dogs, coyotes, large horned owls, red-tail hawks, the occasional mountain lion...as well as everyone else's free-roaming tomcats with strong territorial instincts, all spoiling for a fight.

Sorry for the cat and you. That's no way to go.

When I was living way out in the country, every one of them was an outdoor cat and death was part of life. A couple met their demise from cars, though given the clear view of the road I'm sure it was cruel drivers rather than accidents. I'm sure a couple more were dinner for big owls at night. I'm positive I lost one to a PTSD-suffering and deranged ex-Vietnam vet who had a foxhole at the far end of the valley (no joke). My big Burmese male went ferral and he'd stop by for an hour once every 2 weeks until he came no more. The last one was a small gray-tiger that I found belly-up, frozen in a freezing rain. He was scratched up and had obviously gone down fighting, driving off the enemy before he died.

In many circumstances, cats can be kept indoors, and that's the most safe and healthy environment. Otherwise...

I'm sorry for your loss. I mourn animals as much as I mourn the humans, sometimes even more so.

    Sorry about your kitty.

As I was approaching one of the busier rush hour intersections in Norman, on my run yesterday, I noticed a couple of loose pit bulls trying to cross the street. They were caught by traffic and the cars were trying to get around them without hitting them.

As I got closer they noticed me, and left the street, to come over and growl and bark at me. I finally "Nice doggie."'ed them into thinking I was not dinner, and they ran off through an opening in a fence of a nearby home.

I trotted on with my run, thinking I am going to have to start carrying my mace again. That was a bit unsettling.

...and, oh, yeah ... my point ... those dogs were lucky they weren't found at the edge of the road.
