My 15 year old son's shoes can smell like that and his football uniform after a game from sweat....

    I can wash the uniform...

The shoes however I use Alum, a white powder in the cooking spice section used to keep canned pickles crisp, I put that in his shoes at the end of the day and in about a week the odor is completely neutralized. It's cheap and doesn't mask odor with perfumes that worsen through the day.

Works well in your shoes if you have athletes foot too.

A buddy and I were loading trucks one summer and we wore these protective sock-sleeve things on our arms. Around the same time (after about a month) we both started noticing after a shift, the sleeves went from smelling like general sweat to pungent urine.

He did some investigating and determined that we'd burned through our fat and were sweating muscle.

Can't confirm that. But we lost a lot of weight in that heat without getting "swole".

I'll bet he was peeing on them at night.

Kidding aside, the same kind of smell you get out of a cast? Where you sniff it and it's not great, but you sniff it a couple of times anyway, and then say "it's kind of a sweet smell, but not really sweet" ? :)

Some of the glues and leathers used in shoes
are treated with types of uric acid and other chemicals that
can product unique smells when moisture
    or extreme temps occur.

Did you spill a hoppy IPA on them ?

Whenever I'm out with a buddy of mine, I'm always reminded to change my cat's litter box when he orders his usual Dogfish Head stunt beer...

Uric acid used to be added to beer, too. For anyone who hasn't heard the word "lant" before, you can look it up (it's safe to look up).

    John Hiatt has an idea...

"Played a gig with John Hammond Jr. up in Vancouver BC
Exotic dancer came in my dressing room, started dancing exotically
They were smoking something in the audience that night, smelled exactly like cat pee
Old days are comin' back to me

Did you wipe your feet off after you stepped out of the litter box?

Did you wipe your feet off after you stepped out of the litter box? Did you do it twice?

My tshirt smells like spoiled milk. I haven't spilled any milk on it. I think I've just begun exuding that odor.

Are you sure you're not a cat and peed on your own shoes?

IMO your biggest problem is that you have basketball shoes.

Trade 'em in for some ice hockey skates and thank me later

Get a cat. Then it won't be so weird and hard to explain.
