I was looking for a slightly different color that you are and I used brown paste pore filler, sanded back and then a little bit of brown in the lacquer. It was the same brown that I used for the edges of the 'burst so it carries the color from the top around to the back. Since you are trying to duplicate the color in your book yours will turn out differently.

For the cavities I found it really easy to use a couple of Forstner bits rather than trying to make router templates. If you do make templates, the one for the electronic cavity is not symmetrical (if I remember correctly)

Freeman is correct...you need to do the whole finish regimen on your test piece up through at least a coat or three of the clear you're going to use to ascertain the actual color you're going to get.

I found the maple top to be a little cupped, the fix was easy. I boiled water for about twenty minutes with the tops sitting on top of the saucepot, the steam unwraps them, after that, I clamp them down for about to days!
WARNING! If you have to go through that step, be sure that wife is out of the house!

From '64 to '59 it is only six years...I am really getting closer!
Edit, Jupiter you are right I check the color on the internet and it is really close to a 335.
I mix water base aniline 60% red and 40% mahogany brown in case anyone wants to reproduce it.

Since color changes over time on any finish and wood species and colors in printed materials are not necessarily "true to life", I think you're pretty much at the point that you have an excellent shade to work with there!

The maple top is very straight now,I clump the two pieces down and make several passes with my brutal old trusty tool!
A solid bar of steel perfectly flat with 60 grit sandpaper attached with double stick tape on it.
Now I am waiting for the hide glue to come with mail.
