well, my trusty ole DOD Milkbox died after several years of playing, and i was lost without my compressor. I ran out and bought the only compressor around in my state which was at guitar center the MXR Dyna Comp....TOTAL CRAP. i guess its ok if all u want is squashed tone.

but i put ALOT of time and effort to make my guitars alone sound AMAZING. my guitars tone blows most people's mind that they sound so good without effects.

BUT, i really love the effect and slight coloring i get with a compressor, just brings out a brilliance that ive come to love over the years. the Dyna Comp did NOT bring this out. problem was the attack control, there wasnt one.

so after LOTS of research, i settled on the MXR Custom Comp, yes its 2 knob but there is 2 internal knobs as well. ...

so here we go......

after playing with it for a few hours, i found i like the internal control set all the way clockwise, this allows me to have my natural attack and high end without losing any tone at all, but without being sharp. once i got this set, i didnt need either one anymore.

from here i can control everything with the 2 external knobs. i use the level just to adjust my volume, so everything i get is basically from my sensitivity/compression knob...

at 9 o'clock, i get my natural guitar tone with the slightest bit of thickening to my notes to make a REALLY nice full tone. i love this setting, especially when i want commanding low string notes.

at 12 o'clock, i get a great middle of the road compression which allows me my tone but also allows for lots of rhythm playing.

at 3 o'clock to all the way clockwise, i get a full compressed sound. really snappy, the low strings dont bring out as much tone, but everything is nice and even, and sustains forever. i literally held a note for 5 minutes until i got bored with it, of course i use using the amp for a little feedback but still was able to hold it.

so overall, i LOVE this pedal. i can keep my tone, or compress like crazy. very simple to adjust. i can see where some people may want different internal settings, but for me, all the way clockwise allows my guitar to do what it does, and the pedal allows me to do what i do at 3 0'clock and past that it does what a compressor should do.

sometimes i am amazed at how much better i play with it...i dont need a compressor to play "good" and "even". i CAN play without it, i just love what it adds to my sound.

so anyone with any doubts on what to get, i would highly recommend the MXR Custom Comp. i would have loved to had a Keeley 4 knob, but, i live on a musician's budget here lol.. but i am VERY happy with this pedal.

+1 It's the only compressor I have ever owned. FWIW I have never even thought about getting another comp as this one does everything I want it to quietly!

I have one on my crummy little SS peavey in my computer desk and it actually makes the Peavey sound OK.

Are you sure you don't mean counter clockwise? Are you talking about both internal knobs here? I've had this pedal for a while and just realized yesterday how magical it is. Now I'm trying to find my settings.i think I like both internals at 12 o clock and volume around 12 and "sensitivity" around 10 or 11 o clock. I'm still trying to figure out if I want the attack fast or slow... here in the manual it says counter clockwise to hear more attack or clockwise to suppress the notes 🤷‍♂️I'm confused. I like to have the actual front of the note on there somewhat. Chicken pickin sounds cool, but I don't know if that sound suits my actual style. I like srv tones and bluesy stuff with kind of a modern folk twist all the way to funk and rock. Those are probably my 4 corners of music lol. Any help or insight is greatly appreciated.
