My son turns a year old in a couple weeks and my wife wanted to throw him a Peter Pan birthday party. She has a Peter Pan outfit for him and she wanted me to grow a nice Captain Hook handlebar mustache. 2 1/2 months in and it’s growing pretty good.

Anyone ever grown a nice mustache?

A nice one? No. Just a run of the mill, this matches the beard kind.

Ok. I'll stop being a wise-ass. I am sure that most of us have dabbled and experimented with beards, moustaches, and all their variants many, many times. Some keep them forever. Some come and go. Enjoy. Have fun. Why not?

I grow it as part of the not shaving my face thing that I do most of the time. Then I get weird and shave away the beard and leave the moustache for a few minutes and laugh with my wife about it. Then I get rid of that too. Probably average about four a year.

Back when I was your age, I did indeed. Turns out that you need appropriate genetics and a great deal of time to get a true cartoon handlebar. #1: I cannot stand to have the hair above my lip hang below my lip line. For a real handlebar, you must grow the entire thing out well below your bottom lip and past your chin...it must be trained and waxed to shape. This takes years of effort...

It is so not worth it. My mustache has been in place since I was able show a few hairs above my lip. I have shaved it off completely exactly once...which resulted in a severe reaction, razor burn, swelling, etc. I actually had to go to the Dr. as my upper lip turned bright red and started peeling like I'd been branded with a hot iron. His recommendation: "Don't shave your mustache!"

Ohhhh, yeah, uh, women friends refused to hug me then though.
My wife thought it was hilarious, and called it a porn star moustache.
The down the sides type which may or may not be a handlebar.

Not recommended for utility but good for recreation.

I think what killed it for me was the food and beverage catching function.
The beard of course being worse at that but also easier to maintain and warm in the winter.

No. I already look like a cop and/or a serial killer, I don’t need to add to the image...

My wife doesn’t like them, so that adds to my lack of mustache.

My wife’s cousin grows a luxurious one...but she doesn’t appreciate any comments about it.

I stopped shaving the day I graduated from high school, in 1969. I keep it trimmed these days, mostly, but not at all interested in even the amount of shaving required to create a mustache.

I don't cut my hair, either. It seems to be going away without any effort on my part.

I call this game "Fun With Your Face", and I've played it many times, though I've gone clean-shaven for several years now. As noted above, a true handlebar takes years. I've never had the patience to grow one.
