... also, I generally prefer my tube amp builds for distortion (especially for recording), but I like building/collecting stuff...

I also like stomp boxes for live stuff. They’re like tools in a toolbox. Especially if I’m using my BF Fender reverb type 40 watt amp.

No real must-haves bc I'm still figuring this out, but to have some different options I purchased a Danelectro store display (on what felt like a deal)...it has a Pride of Texas, Cash Cow and Billion Dollar Boost---to my ears there is a lot of variety. How usable it is in the future remains to be seen.

So many have the Rat on their must haves. That's why I bought one a while back. It's still not one of my faves...maybe I need to play it more!

    My staples:
One of the many forms of tubescreamers (currently the Behringer TO8000)
    Keeley 1962
    Boss OD-3

The Rat seems to be a popular choice here, and that's also my first choice. But interestingly, I've never run into another guitarist using a Rat.

Many have been said. I’ll add two:
    - Bluesbreaker
    - Zendrive (for when you want that TS tone into a clean amp…)

PS: I also like my Rat ;)

I’m a bedroom champ .i don’t gig anymore. So I use my Dod 250 as a boost for my other cheap overdrive and distortion stuff, I do (don’t ask me why) find my Mosky Obsessive OD very fun and interesting..Mileage may vary I’m a cheap ass

May not need to have any of them, but ones that are probably a must to at least try:
    • Rat
    • Bluesbreaker (be sure to try version 1)

I'll be the odd man out here: I've never had a Rat.

The only stomp box I use any more is an old Danelecto Daddy-O overdrive. It works great for me, but it seems like I'm the only one who likes it.

The only 2 I can't live without are a Klon clone and a Timmy clone.

Once I experienced one of the newer amp emulation pedals, I sold off all of my traditional OD/dirt pedals for the amp sounds I wanted. I'll never go back. Part of it I think is amp emulation pedals operate like a real amp, so they all go from clean to real dirty like a real amp does. This way, with three amp pedals I have four amp sounds (one being your real ame) at my disposal and makes finding a sound that you like much more intuitive. Anyway, just an option.

Trying to come up to speed with this - what are the names of some amp emulation pedals I could research?

    Thanks

My go to is a Jeckyl&Hyde OD and Distortion with a Danelectro Pride of Texas as a slightly gritty clean boost. I replaced my old Soul Food with the Pride of Texas. The switch is quieter and the tone is more true.

Absolutely none. Never owned one and never will. Really, really don't like the sound of any OD or distortion. Never have, never will.
