A lot of "nicknames" are received for various reasons in childhood and some of them become fixed for life.

Geddy Lee's name is Gary, but his old-country Polish grandmother pronounced it as sounding like "Geddy," so his pals latched onto that and called him Geddy too.

Ric Emmett of Triumph's name is Rick, but the record company approved printing of album jackets with his name inadvertently misspelled. And for the band it was a joke so good, it stuck.

Bono and Edge would have to be my pet dislikes for pseudonyms. Why dey all do it??Okay a nickname here and there but so many. Elvis Costello is a weird one, why use Elvis who had a real name Elvis? Got me mystified.

Bono got his name as a youngster from the priest who ran the school choir and said he had a "bono vox", latin for a good voice. No idea where the Edge's came from but Gordon Sumner better known as Sting's byname came from when he was a young kid and constantly wore his favourite rugby or football strip which was coloured with black and yellow hoops like a bumblebee and got the name from that.

I have an early Byrd's song book when he used his first name Jim instead of his middle name Ruger.

Early Byrds recordings were by studio musicians except McGuinn, who actually already worked as a studio musician himself.

Interesting story. His real name is James Roger McGuinn, and he used go by the name Jim McGuinn, then all of a sudden he decided to be Roger. Go figure.

Roger McGuinn's given name is James Joseph McGuinn III. He changed it to Roger McGuinn because he was interested in outer space and UFO's (Roger, over and out) and such around the time of the 5D album (recall Mr. Spaceman?).
