I was just jamming to that song with my old man, it's one of our favorites. I was filling in on keys and he was playing his Tele. We figured out all the changes, song is in Bm. What we're wondering is, why does a certain change work (B-D-B)? Are they temporarily changing the key of the song to B major at that point?

Because Billy, Dusty and Frank are brilliant, and even their mistakes are epic.

    Otherwise, I don’t know.

But the song is in Bm and that quick transition is B-D-B (all major).

If it were a modulation to B as the key center, the chord would have to be a D#.

I think what they're doing is simply using the major form of the Bm to add spice and flavor. D is a chord in the key of Bm.

Am I wrong about it? Try playing along, I believe there's a quick B-D-B transition.

Yeah, I'm not really hearing a B major...it all sounds like Bm to me.

Just played it again and I think you're right...Turnaround sounds like Bm-D-Bm. My bad.
