My daughter took her state licensing exam yesterday for Mental Health Counseling. She passed, and scored well. She is now a licensed mental health counsellor, specializing in DBT counseling of adolescents.

Not. A. Chance. In. He||. I. Could. Do. That. Job.

4 years of undergrad, 3 years of grad school, and a state exam is "all it took". We are very proud of her!

    What an accomplishment! Congratulations!

My wife did similar with her nurse practitioners license. Yep, being finished with school and graduating is good... but then that state board exam is brutal. When my wife took her state boards, the system was set up to shut down the test immediately, once the math was determined that the participant had passed or failed. So she was sitting in a cubical, taking the test, and the screen shut off. She had to walk to the front of the office and get a print out... which read "pass". She came out into the parking lot where I had been waiting for two hours... crying/balling tears of joy and relief.

I had to look up DBT...

That seems like a hard line of work to be in. I've dealt with the fallout of type of issue and the families suffer a lot. It seems like you'd need to treat the whole family, more than just the individual.

Congratulations! Such a huge accomplishment. I know exactly how you feel. My daughter has been a Nurse Practitioner for about 6 years now. I remember all of the hard work, studying, and sleepless nights it took to get her there.

great job supporting her and celebrating her! That is meaningful and important work. My wife works with foster kids whose lives are incredible in what they have endured and continue to endure. It is a specific kind of great person who can work with kids who have a tough hand dealt them. Give her a hug from us!

I was hoping she was licensed to kill. I have a few people on my list, but I need discretion and stealth... ;) :D

Congratulations to her! That's a tough job, but the mere fact that she chose the field means she's likely suited for it. Good luck to her!

DBT - Dialectical Based Therapy. Dialects is the concept that extreme opposites can be true:
    • I love my parents.
    • I hate my parents.
Adolescents get stuck swinging back and forth between the two. DBT therapy is about giving them tools so they can recognize both, but stay closer in the middle as to not spiral. This is especially useful with cluster-B personalities (Cluster B personality disorders are characterized by dramatic, overly emotional or unpredictable thinking or behavior. They include antisocial personality disorder, borderline personality disorder, histrionic personality disorder and narcissistic personality disorder.)

Think of that with teens. Ouch.

Important work; hard work; necessary work.

Congratulations. That is a field that in my opinion is crying out for more good therapists. You are right to be proud.

Our daughter made some choices that finally left her raising five children on her own. She went back to school, completed her BS at age 43 and is now working full time counseling women who’ve been and are incarcerated, writing grants and just basically doing a lotta good. I’m amazed that she’s able to do that with her hands already so full, and am of course proud.

Congratulations to all members of the unixfish school.

DBT is incredibly useful and effective - she couldn't possibly be teaching those teens anything they can benefit from more.
