Loved the man. Oddly enough, I'm sitting here with my Tele, just noodling along with the songs on the Xfinity blues channel, and they just played "I Pity the Fool."
The definitive version. Wayne Bennett on guitar
Love, love, love Bobby Bland! One of the best R&B singers ever. He could be smooth as silk or have a growl at any given moment. I really like the arrangements for his records of the 1960's.
I was lucky enough to have seen him about 3 or 4 times in the late '60s-early '70s - with Wayne Bennett and Mel Brown - in black nightclubs in LA and Oakland. He had a Revue - MC, the band played 2 or three songs, a warm up singer and then the BIG INTRO - ladies and gentleman THE MAN Bobby Blue Bland. Bobby looking good in a sharkskin suit and a process pomp. Folks were out for an evening - dressed well, smelling good, dancing - and thick cigarette smoke and cognac and scotch flowing. Very fine times.
I saw him in Columbus, Georgia, on a double-bill with B.B King in the late 70s. One of my favorite concert memories. I got to shake each one's hand.
