Growing up in Toronto with News 4 Buffalo beaming across Lake Ontario.

My impression as a child was that there were a lot of houses on fire there.

My Uncle's family lived in Niagara Falls NY so that's as close as I've been to Buffalo. I really need to explore it further.

I have been trying to create a “set of rules to simplify life”
if you have a routine to reduce stuff you might share?

No wisdom on simplifying life from me. My general rule of thumb was "trash everything not related to guitars or my workshop, and hope Mrs_S doesn't overruled me before it gets covered up by other stuff in the dumpster."

Oh, and this little pearl of wisdom: "Don't ride your bike and get hit by a drunk in an SUV three weeks before moving." That's the opposite of simplifying.

I live in Rochester and the crime in this area is off the charts now. Buffalo is about the same. Things have really gone downhill. If you really want to know what's going on with crime check the FB group that has the dispatches posted. Good luck.

Buffalo is a donut city, not much crime in the populous suburbs, where he's moving to, Tonawanda for example.

There are a couple bad sections of Buffalo, "the East Side" for example.

But other than that it's pretty safe.

Amherst New York, a first ring suburb, constantly ranks as one of the safest large communities in the country. And it is the home of SUNY Buffalo. a huge multidisciplinary State University, medical, dental, law, engineering, physics...

Congratulations! Buffalo is a great music town; lots of great players and a great scene.
I think you'll enjoy the change.
Eat at Mother's - tell them you're a friend of a friend of Gary Malaber - and Chef's; it's not just wings - enjoy the beef on weck and great pizza.

I think I’ll for sure apply the pearl of wisdom. I had a tumble from a bike a few years back, a weekend in the ICU. Bikes haven’t been fun since.

Good luck on your move. We have to like where we're living, and it's good to go where your needs are met.

I'm located in the middle of the Canadian prairies and weather aside it's a great place to live. Even the weather is really good sometimes. I wouldn't consider relocating at this point in my life. Right now health care is my biggest concern and at this point I'm having nothing but great luck with it and wonderful, timely care. I don't want to mess with it!

Having just completed a move a couple of weeks ago I would make sure to rent a dumpster and purge!

Best of luck with the move!

And we have off from work for a couple days, sit around in our underwear drinking beer and playing guitar. The snow melts and we go back to work.

Right now, looking at Buffalo from Hamburg beach, you see this:

We downsized 2 years ago to a house half as big. So we had to get rid of half our stuff. It was a gigantic amount of work, but it felt great. I am happy to say I threw out almost nothing. Despite constant “just get a big dumpster” type comments from people. Uh, no. Anything with more than $10 value got listed on Craigslist. I went room by room, closet by closet, and listed a few things each week. Over the course of 2 months it all got sold. I must have sold a nearly a hundred items. There were a few trips to Goodwill with clothes and stuff. At the very end there was 1 visit by the junkman, mostly for leftover scraps out of the garage, etc. All told I pocketed at least $5,000 from my efforts.

In our new house, every single possession is something we deliberately chose to bring. Of the 50% we got rid of, I don’t think we have missed a single thing.
