I seriously doubt there's any problem with any orientation. I used to play with my bassman head standing on end a lot due to cab tilt and stage space available.

Orange has production amps with the tubes oriented horizontal pointing towards the front of the amp. There's a vent on the top of the amp in front of the controls.

The Rocker 15 & Rocker 32 Combos are set up this way.

I do think in Orange's case it's about a layout that can just be flipped in the combo vs head design. When you take the chassis out of the amp to work on it and orient it so the tubes point up the controls are sitting there on the side in front of you.

Oh on these amps all the tubes are fully held in place by metal shields/supports so gravity would not be straining the glass/socket, only stress on internal elements.

I really can’t think of any reason this would cause problems.

This amp well over 50 years old and it has held up very nicely.

RCA tube manual is great, I've got a few from different years. But does that data mean much with the tubes made today?
That said, I've been running JJ EL34s sideways in an old 1987 in a tweed high power Twin cab for some time now.

My Princeton clone is horizontal as well. I just installed some spring tube retainers and it is working two years ago, 60 gigs and hundreds of 5 hours rehearsals

Not a problem ever... so far

The 18w TMB (el84) I built a few years ago is oriented controls up tubes down when mounted in cab.
I didn't have a cab built and played it a lot for at least a year laying flat / tubes horiznontal with no ill effects.

You can do it but it's sub-optimal from a durability standpoint since the structure inside the tube is not designed to support parts that way. You can probably get away with it, though bumping amps around is bad for tubes to begin with and a horizontal mount just makes it a bit worse.

    Yep, and here's the proof:

This is one of the original Svetlana EL-34s that hung horizontally in my Marshall JTM-612:

...It overheated after over twenty (20) years(!) of service.

As far as heat dissapation is concerned, horizontally is actually better than base down, and much better than base up, which is what Fender usually does. ?????

Marshall pre JCM 800 combo's shared the same chassis as the heads which rendered the tubes horizontal in the combo cabinet. I never heard of a bluesbreaker having horizontal mounted tube issues!

I've got a Crate V30, tubes are all horizontal. 4xEL83, 3x12AX7. Played a lot of gigs with that, so it's been banged around. It's got a vent on op.

Peavey Bravo had horizontally mounted preamp and power tubes that were also enclosed in a little metal box with a fan moving air across them.

There were several Peavey amps that had horizontally mounted tubes, the Triumph amps (though they seemed to have reliability issues), early tweed Peavey all tube amps and maybe some others.

Ok, let's run through some common tube types from their data sheets. I searched until I found a sheet with info on what mounting positions are allowed.

    RCA 12AX7: any

    RCA 6L6GC: any

    Amperex EL84: any

    TungSol 6CA7: any

TungSol 5Y3GT: vertical, or horizontal if pins 2 and 4 are in a vertical plane

Sylvania 5U4GB: vertical, or horizontal if pins 1 and 4 are in a vertical plane

    GE 5AR4: any
