    Regarding the "House" comment.

It amazes me that the house buying process (the biggest purchase many people will ever make) has to be done so impulsively.

If a house comes on the market, you have to be there and ready to bid if it is a good one. Bad ones sit on the market a while, but you don't want those. The ones you want move fast. I don't even buy a guitar that fast! Let a lone a car or house. Bah!

I guess that is supply/demand working during a seller's market.

When I was 18 I bout (on sale ) the life style of a lifelong drop out and at 72 I still can't find a phone numbers Fax number email address, post office box in order to return it, though I thing I lost the receipt during the recent past unpleasantness.I also got what must have been a mail order bride, sight unseen, but that purchase turned out fairly well, until I understood why her momma named her Medeao_O

No shame in owning nice things if they are financially within your means.
If the guilt is too much for you, send it back.
I’d use it as inspiration to play more.

Yep, every motorcycle I’ve ever bought. I love riding...for a couple of weeks. So five different times I’ve impulsively bought a motorcycle, then find myself a year later trying to figure out how to get rid of it.

Yeah, I don't do impulse buys for anything north of $20 or so. If I feel pressured by time or sales techniques, I come back later (and usually not at all).

I bought this shortly after EVH passed. I was a fan for most of his career but now play mostly Telecasters and very traditional country music. But I wanted it!

I dont impulse buy. Because my wife impulse buys enough for 8 people.

I seriously research and think on even menial things like cables, videogame controllers, screen protectors....

I think I used to impulse buy; I certainly bought cigars, warhammer stuff, and random stuff that I had a vague notion of wanting and the value equaling or exceeding the asking price.

Being obscenely picky and frugal means an impulse buy is typically a deal too good to pass up.

    But I agree on the house thing;

Ostensibly the biggest purchase of your life and you have to pull the trigger, hope to not get outbid while not paying more than the bank says its worth, and be saddled with factors you cant see out ahead in addition to shifting property values afterward.

I understand location is the first among the things that determine cost, but everywhere in the US (and presumably beyond) we take a gamble agreeing to that mortgage. Good times.

Almost as bad as impulse buying (most of my guitars acquired that way) is impulse selling. Which is sometimes needed to fund the impulse buying.

    In the early 2000's,
My wife and I made two used 'lemon' car purchases ( too good to be true...) of:

    - a fatally flawed Mercury Sable SW ( overheating driving it home the night of sale!) It had sat in water, not driven in over a Year- how stupid were we??

    - a Plymouth Voyager minivan with real engine trouble we did not know about- we borrowed $$ from our son to pay for it. ( I'm STILL sorry, Mike!)

** both cars DEAD within 2-3 months after purchase, thousands of $$ wasted.

(We do NOT discuss at home )

Oh bummer. Car purchases are definitely a gamble unless there is a warranty (A good warranty!). I typically work on my own cars, though there have been times that I've paid someone to do work that was going to be really time consuming when I didn't have the time to do it.

I'll always be upset that I did not stand my ground or do SOMETHING about this with the (2) car sellers. I sort of confronted, then just backed away...

THEN, did my usual dumb*ss follow up:
pour more $$ into a problem!
(when it comes to keeping dying cars alive)
