I guess the real question here is:
Jimmy Page wore some pretty silly looking outfits. Keith Richards wore makeup. And both of them rule. Billy Gibbons has a ridiculous looking beard.
It's just part of the guy's brand. He doesn't look foolish if he's on stage with Rob Zombie.
People are too obsessed with the person playing nowadays ... how they look, being female, making fun of people etc. It's about the music, not the person!
I think John 5 is fantastic.. He is the reason I gave telecasters a look into picking one up after years of strats. I'd love to have lessons from him if I thought I was worthy enough and not embarass myself .
The forum in general has been quite trollish lately with some of the threads that has been having to be locked due to attitudes.. Something in the water or what?
Feel like I'm back in High School some days reading some of these...
I,for one, would like to thank the OP. I had never even heard of J5 before, but now I have mad respect...that dude lives and breathes Tele Love and Pride!
Yes, I have noticed both of these recent trends.
You know what I meant, and the anonymity thing is commonplace on many forums.
I guess it just irritates me when threads like this pop up, because though some people may find it amusing, or justify it as "being their right to voice their opinion," I see it as a part of the reason why people DON'T want to post under their real identities and open themselves up to direct harassment. The "hero worship" thing is probably the other end of that spectrum, and is probably just as discomforting.
I would say that in general, when it comes to truly talented musicians, we are in a 'post-hero' point in time. As compared to the 70's or 80's. I think one of the great equalizers of the Internet has been communication access in both directions between artists and fans. Nowadays it's considered pretty poor form to fawn, and even poorer form to condescend. Most artist interactions are generally polite, and fairly brief. "Love your work, I'm a fan, lets talk about the Broncos' and what have you. Wouldn't you agree? Especially among 'die-hard' fans...anymore, they will likely meet again.
It's different that the 'jet set' superstardom (at least in music), IMO. And even 'stars' like to kill time talking about their favorite things...trust me. ;-)
yes it is a major achievement.
