Would he be a lot cooler if he just shaved a bald spot on the top of his head and grew the rest into a pony tail, ball cap or cowboy hat to cover the bald spot?

Or how about a big pompador and some flashy western shirts with a lot of sequins and embroidery?

The guy's image fits right in with his genre, and he is a very successful and respected player. The OP obviously isn't a fan of that kind of music. Takes a lot of people to make a world, plenty of room for the OP and John5 to make their way through life without the juvenile commentary.

Those hundreds of studio cats probably have zero stage presence and/or no songwriting ability.

THAT is the difference between a studio cat and someone like John 5....it has nothing to do with makeup.

Personally, I'm of the opinion that the most foolish looking Telecaster player would have to be me.

As far as hundreds of Tennessee and Texas players at his level - well, he's got credits playing with Garbage, Meat Loaf, Paul Stanley, Skynyrd, Ricky Martin, Alice Cooper, Rod Stewart, Scorpions, Wilson Phillips, Salt-N-Pepa, Rick Springfield, k.d. lang... I dunno if I care too much about hundreds of players on the other side of the country if I have a solid lineup of west coast studio gigs and world tours to survive on.

    they asked for it

I don't get the problems people have with this thread. We're talking about popular music here, and to that extent, the look of the artist matters a lot. In that sense, we have the same right to critique their appearance as well as their musicianship--because both are part of the performance.

it obviously has something to do with his stage/ personal presence,
    otherwise he wouldnt do it.
maybe thats what you have to do if you want to sell records to 15 year olds these days.
ive never been interested in money- i just aim to squeak by,
so likely i just dont get it.

Yeah, but none of those guys would ever get the chance to play with Rob Halford, David Lee Roth, Marilyn Manson, Rob Zombie, Alice Cooper, Lita Ford, Paul Stanley, Saliva, Meat Loaf, Static-X, Scorpions, Filter and many others.

Like it or hate it, John 5's image has made him very successful and allowed him to amass a great collection of Teles. I'm sure that, after being called "foolish" by some Internet Tough Guy, John's currently crying into the case of his 1950 Broadcaster.

John 5's look is exactly right for what he does. And he does what he does exceedingly well.

see i wouldnt view playing with any of those people as an achievement.
id never even show up for the gigs.
just because someone says thats success, it doesnt mean its cool.
none of those people are cool.
ok alice was alright 30 years ago-
nah, that argument doesnt work here.

expensive guitars blah blah blah- i dont care.

I get it, but I think it's about more than selling records...it's about artistic expression. For some musicians, it's not all about the guitar, it's about the show. It's nothing new...from Elvis shaking his hips, to Jimi lighting his guitar on fire, to Alice Cooper's nightmare, David Bowie's androgynous-ism, Pink Floyd's Wall, Ozzy, Kiss, Iron Maiden, etc...

    im all for artistic expression,
but everybody is doing the same thing here.
there is no individualism, its all the same.
its dudes my own age dressing up like the kids i see on the bus everyday-
    or vice-versa.
is john5 trying to express himself?
he is the same age as me- i doubt it.

Why are some of you guys so deeply concerned with what another dude wears on stage?

    What a weird thread.

I'd pat just about anyone on the back and shout out a hearty "Atta Boy!" for picking up a Telecaster, as it's one of the least "foolish" things a guitarist could do. Wondering if we'd get more input if it was "Guitarists playing (Teles) when they usually play somethings else" kinda thread. If anything, Porl Thompson (The Cure) playing a Telecaster during the 1992 Wish tour seemed just plain odd to my eyes, being so unexpected to have him not playing an LP/ES-175/ES-335.

Hardly foolish looking, of course. :D
