Really ?
Will he apologize for 20 years of cletus ? and 20 years of frink and Dr hibbert ? And homer ? As an overweight white american nerd hillbilly with a bit of african descent, i am outraged.
It is a cartoon for pete's sake. And it is not like Apu Nahasapeemapetilon is evil.

If he wants to apologize, sincerely, what's the problem? Accountability should go in all directions but people, you know, make excuses. If Azaria's anecdote is true, cool, if not, I'm still not surprised. Outrage? That's a bit over the top for a 'cartoon', no?

The old-school indignant, starboard-leaning folks want to blame 'PC' in any way possible, as they feel accosted in all directions  Sometimes, people just don't like to face crap.

When someone can't laugh at themselves they're in real trouble.

I tend to think Morrissey is a smart guy. If he had come up voice appreciating the caricature, it would not have even been a footnote in the news.

He's probably laughing all the way to the bank at the renewed interest in his catalog created by the current media buzz.

When you're in the business as long as he's been, you learn what puts the bacon in the fridge.

I m not outraged, actually, i am neither american, nor overweight, nor a hillbilly, and so on. What i find silly is why people do feel attacked when they see a cartoon character ? Of course he is a stereotype, that is what makes him appealing.
The thing is, everytime an artist / entertainer says / does/ creates something, he has to walk on eggs. (is that english ?)
Art cannot be safe, it has got challenge your ideas and opinions, otherwise, what is the point ?

It is beyond me.
Of course, if he wants to apologize and it is heartfelt, it is up to him. However if he was compelled to apologize because of the pressure surrounding the apu character, This is sad. Really, really, sad.

edit 2 : Imagine the army of lawyers behind the guys making south park, and if they had to apologize for 20 years of fun insanity.

I agree. Simpsons should have ended before 2000. Could have quit while it was still "safe" to make fun of anyone and everyone. Not that it was right. Just that it was. When was the last media frenzy about Archie Bunker, the friendly neighborhood racist? Exactly.

Morrissey? Haven't given him an ear since Queen is Dead.

I still enjoy them, and they still have at least 1 or 2 jokes / episode which will make me laugh. Plus, they have been there for ? 32 years or something. This is quite an accomplishment, for a cartoon !

The Simpsons is just as good as it ever was.

Any time you experience any form of entertainment hundreds of times, it’s going to seem like it’s not good anymore, or not as good as it was when it was new. But that’s not them. That’s you.

If The Simpson’s was a brand new show today, people would find it hilarious and cutting edge. Because it is.

I don’t understand why Morrissey sees it as hateful. Educate me, please.

He’s portrayed as young, relevant, and in shape. He is not.

Maybe it’s because his flat is a mess?

Best publicity he’s had in a while. Thank The Simpsons and while you’re at it thank Johnny Marr, the reason you had such success. And don’t be that guy yelling at cartoons.

And another edit to say they nailed his giant eyebrows.

It's a dangerous thing to tell others they ae not allowed to feel offended at something. As an Indian American, the Apu thing is less about the character existing, and more about the people around me trying to understand how it might make me feel instead of only how it makes them laugh. Personally, I think a lot about sensitivity is just that: listening, not cancelling, and certainly not condemning either side.

As for Morrissey, I am a conflicted super fan. I found the Simpson's character a little mean to an individual in ways that were irrelevant or generalized. Meanness doesn't do it for me these days.
