Okay, the humble bell took a shellacking via the infamous Saturday Night Live skit. However, there have been many great applications of cowbell over the years. Why don't we pull up some examples that were interesting or exciting? I'll go first:

Who wasn't excited by the intro to "Mississippi Queen" by Mountain in 1970?

An interesting application was the coda and fade on Joe Walsh and Barnstorm's "Meadows" from 1973. The bell starts on the left at 3:39.

A fellow over on GearSpace bought the Caribou Ranch Recording Studio cowbell used for that one.

So, how about some great examples? Does anyone remember how often Carl Palmer would reach out and whack his coming out of a solo?

    Bob

I always thought it was funny that the aforementioned SNL skit chose Don't Fear The Reaper of all songs. Sure, it has cowbell, and it's pretty steady through the verses, but it is more subdued than the cowbell is in a lot of other songs. Honestly, I heard the song many, many times before I took note of it, but I guess my ear just naturally focused on the guitar.

    This has some.

As does this one with a young Jay Farrar, Jeff Tweedy, and you guessed it, same drummer as the previous song, Mike Heidorn.

They chose the song because BOC was the musical guest that week.

Great dancing! But wearing a tie with a jeans is just....wrong! Just kidding - anybody that does a split like that has my utmost respect.

Nothing wrong with cowbell - just like any percussion, it depends on the way it's used. Our singer uses quite a lot of cowbell, tambourine, maracas and other stuff (she used to be in a Samba band for years). It's absolutely essential for some styles, just imagine the whole Buena Vista Social Club without a cowbell...
It only gets annoying if you have some robotic 4-on-the-floor cowbell for 5 minutes.

Perfect timing, I’ve been working on learning “Mississippi Queen” for the past few days.
