Wasn't aware of these. They're hideous.

They didn't last very long - pretty much G&L trying to take on BC Rich design-wise circa 1984-86, maybe even 1987. By 1988 they had gone to more elongated Strat shape for the Interceptor model:

Maybe, maybe not. Remember - Leo created this beast in the 1980s:
I love that they designed this ergonomically nightmarish body with four jagged points,

And then added that arm cutout.
Seemingly as an afterthought attempt to make the thing playable.

THIS IS A POINTY GUITAR, AND THE PLAYERS ARM GOES HERE.
NOWHERE ELSE. IT GOES HERE, AND YOU BETTER NOT MOVE IT.

about the guitar in the original post, I am actually really liking the shape of that cutaway and the recessed controls. The right side of that guitar looks great.

the left side of the guitar as a more traditional tele shape with its flat face, slab sides, and round curves, seems totally out of place and clashes with the complex carves and sharp angles of the right side of the instrument.

I think they should have gone further and created something more unique than just an altered telecaster shape. Then the craftsmanship of those unique cutaway carves would feel natural and in place, rather than arbitrary and even deliberately obtuse.

I am also not a fan of fretboards without position markers. Side dots help, but in my opinion it impacts playability. Skill depends on hand eye coordination, and those little fretboard dots make a big difference whether you notice them or not.

I don't think the Interceptor bass ever had the guitar's shape.

Extra points for the wiggle stick, however

Yep; they made the guitar look a bit more like the bass with the 1988 redesign.

Then of course by 1990 G&L moved away from their more original body shapes to the traditional S and T shapes they use today.

You won't catch me wasting my time hating on something I don't like that doesn't effect my life one way or the other. You will catch me wasting my time calling out people who do.

What about this?
it's weird but I think it's an improvement. Now there's more corresponding angles on both sides.

now it's kind of like the teisco tulip... of death.
Yes, better...more "balanced". Still dislike. The OP guitar looks worse from the back...and I don't like reverse headstocks. Oh, and pointy. I don't do pointy.

Still, if you need a multi-tool, you'll always have a handy can opener...

If I left that lying around the house my wife would put a cork on the pointy bit, to stop anyone "having their eye out on it!".

(she's been known to do the same to the tops of high-hat stands, or any other pointy looking thing that dangerously tempts us around the house)

I like it, but not enough to buy it. I'm glad that the basic Tele layout is getting some modern-ish love like the Strat has had for ever.

Fender aren't innocent either... somehow this seems worse:

Yes, that's an actual Fender Stratocaster.

Otherwise it's just a normal hair-metal-era superstrat but this time made by Fender themselves.
I think it's the headstock though, that really brings it "home". That spandex-encrusted STRAT -logo...
Brrrrr. 🥶

Yes, I agree it is very…wrong.

But to be fair, it was called an HM Strat, and it was advertising itself for what it was: a Shredder’s Strat. There was a market that they could make money, and they used it.

Even more hideous/sacrilegious is the fact that they had an HM Tele, too.
