One of my composition students is from Iran. He is composing a piece for interactive computer and setar. The setar is a 4-string instrument with bound frets, spaced in intervals of varying size. On the right hand, he uses the same style of pick I have seen sitar players use. I believe it is called a mizrab. I am googling it right now to see if both picks are essentially the same, which they appear to be, if they are both called a mizrab. However, google seems hung up on a search for this, so I don't have a more definitive answer.
It is a piece of wire that wraps around your index finger of the right hand. It bends up and over the tip of the finger. I would link to a picture, but, seriously, when I type mizrab into chrome or google, the page hangs.
I tried it on and it felt pretty comfortable. You kind of flick the finger forward and backward rapidly to get a very smooth tremolo. I wonder if anyone uses these on guitar?
