I sold all major components of my former sound system with the exception of (4) Electro Voice passive speakers and (2) Crown amps.

Should I hold to the lowest number of brands as possible?

i.e., stay with E.V. for the new sub(s) and any other speakers as well as only adding Crown amps or go the patchwork mix and match with maybe a Yamaha sub?
What makes the “smarter or nicer” looking system?

The smarter route would be to match your tops with one another and your subs with one another. That's not mandatory but it is optimum. Subs and tops do not need to match. If your speakers or subs have built in crossovers, be sure the corresponding speaker or sub can handle those frequencies around the cut off.
