The curious career of “Every Breath You Take” reminds me of the similar case of R.E.M.’s “The One I Love.” There are not a ton of lyrics in that song, and a prominent line is, “…a simple prop to occupy my time…”. I remember reading an interview with a member of the band and they commented on couples choosing that as “their song.” If I remember correctly, “good luck” was the band member’s comment on the couples in question.
I remember in an interview Michael Stipe said the chorus goes "Fire... Fire..." because that was the most violent thing he could think of at the moment.
