The Valve Jr is something I didn't even know existed.
I'm intrigued!

This isn't mine but it is exactly the way mine is set up. I can use 1 or 2 bottoms. Mine is stowed for a move. I might use a Tube Screamer first. I did use my Fender Reverb in front until it was stolen.... but this is pretty loud for a 5 watter.

I'm a little confused by this thread , it seems you as are looking for a backup amp for live gigs , your main amp being 50 watts . Many of the replies seem to be for bedroom amps , 5 watts or less . I have played a number of the amps suggested and while I agree with the assessment mudder gave of the Vox Nighttrain , and I love mine keep in mind it's just 15 watts . Chud suggested the Soldano mini , that may be the way to go , considering size and weight vs. power . I have a Friedman mini amp , 30 watts , but there is no clean tone to it . Good luck on your search !

You could pick up a used Pod II and run it into the Quilter's effects return. For ~$40 you'll have a huge variety of amp models and effects to choose from.

The Hotone Nano Legacy mini amps are terrific. I have the Mojo Diamond and British Invasion. Of the two, I prefer the BI by a narrow margin; it's more versatile. But they're just 5 watts, and a rather tame 5 watts at that.

I'm still sticking with the DV Mark Raw Dawg 250 - might get it above 5 one day - man this thing slams it. Bought just after the launch 4 years ago on a shop return for $300. I'm just changing out the Neo speaker in the cab for a Legend 1218. Won't know if that's good until installed, and compared, but looking for a little less hi-fi out of the top end. I put an Xotic RC, Exotic BB, Maxon EQ, and a Maxon analog delay in front of it. Dumped the wah, the tremolo, and the TS a while back - less is easier and/or more

I heart my Joyo Zombie.
I have the BlueJay (Blues Junior variant) which I took to a session in the park last Sunday.
powered it through a Powerbank. small Pedalboard too. it was loud and sounded nice.

back home I tinkered a bit more.
since it has an FX loop, I plugged a NUX Mighty Plug in there....instant WOW! way to go.😍

The surprises for me were how much I liked the clean channel and how much I like the effects loop.

I was wondering who had experience with Vox' minis.
They seem to be popular.
I had a 40-watt one with the digital set up and all the effects - was it a VT or VM 40?. For teaching it was great and looked good. An eBay bargain for something like £45. They are only bedroom amps no good for doing jobs.

The Orange Micro Dark Terror has the efffects loop.
I had a student that had an Orange Crush - I think in was the 10 or 20. Just one amazingly good tone. Nothing else just this one really good sound. £60-70 quid for a 20-watt on eBay right now. Just remember though - one sound at different volumes.

I recently acquired a gently used 1x12 tweed cabinet and installed an Eminence Red White and Blues speaker.
Now I'm looking for mini-amps to plug directly into it so I can lighten my load-in.
I am taking delivery Friday on a factory refurbished Quilter Reverb 101 ($380 with shipping).

It delivers 50 Watts of Fender-ish tone with decent reverb and gain.
But I would like to expand my universe.
So what units do you have experience with and which do you recommend???
The only minis I am familiar with would be the smokey
9 volt powered with plastic case. A sparkle brown one sounded dark. They do not all sound the same. The clear one was brighter, not that color has anything to do with it.
Watch for broken thread receivers if buying secondhand.

Did not Terry Kath
or someone use to power a 4 x 12 cabinet with the output
side of these mini amps...? I have been told it can actually
get surprisingly loud, what with how speaker volume demands
most of it's wattage (exponentially) at louder levels...

tbh these 9 volt amps are not very impressive on their own.

Feels like here in the UK we only see DV Mark now and the Quilters have faded from view. What's on the rise is amp pedals and stuff like Helix.

My Epiphone Valve Jr. It's Bitmo modded with a champ transformer, JJ tubes and a Weber Hemp speaker. Also have a Tech 21 Trademark 10 which is a great recording amp.

I don't have one, but that Peavey 6505 mini head looks sexy! Actually looks like my dream amp.
I've had a Roland Micro Cube for a million years which has seen many hours, if you consider that a mini amp.

This amp has been modified a lot, but it's my current favorite. I don't think it's going to get modded again.

Started life as a Vox AC4 TV clone for someone else, but it didn't cut the mustard for them, or me. Now it's a very good emulation (in terms of frequency response) of an AC30 TB with fixed TB values and just the volume and cut. There's only (1) 12AX7 and (1) EL84. I had to do a lot of fiddling to get the right tone without sucking all the gain... but it does it and still plays great clean. Has a vintage, crunchy roar when opened up that is enough for sustaining leads. Plays well with a Ge treble booster too!

In lowest volume format I'm playing it through a 1x8 champ cab loaded with Weber CVA8. It's not quiet, but it's not loud enough to make my ears ring in my small office. When I plug in 12's, it gives me some ringing. I like it with a G12 Alnico the best, but also sounds great with a G12M and G12H.

I have a push pull 10W amp too that kind of similar - I guess you could call it a micro. That just has TB and volume (and a bright switch). Uses (2) 12AX7s and (2) EL84s. It's a tad bit louder but also way more responsive and punchier.

I've modded a lot of VJr's over the years. I don't own any anymore. They weren't too bad if you ditch the stock speaker, the stock OT and add a bit of presence to the circuit. But for what you wind up swapping out, I think it's easier to build new.

DV MARK LITTLE 250M mini head pushing 250 watts thru a 60's Bandmaster cab, loaded with a Swamp Thang and Texas Heat. Thru the clean channel, it's very Fender-like in tone. It has a dirty channel also, but I haven't tried that channel. The first gig I tried it on was an outdoor gig, in an open-field situation. It covered that gig for me without even pushing it hard at all. Very nice little amp. So glad I stumbled on this, as I was originally looking at a Quilter, but decided on this DV Mark.
