It is a blonde finish for sure. The literature of the day specifies only two finishes were available for the MIJ Esquire; blonde and candy apple red. And it is basswood as well. Basswood does not have distinctive grain, thus not much shows through the opaque blonde finish.

Esquires will normally have a factory neck pickup route, so I would guess someone took advantage of that and installed a set of EMG's. Same body/routes for Tele or Esquire.
Reverting it back so a regular single pickup Esquire with a normal Tele pickup would be cool, or even a set if you prefer, for a modified Esquire configuration.
The Japanese Fenders especially from that time period are usually really nice, it looks like a sweet Tele to me :)

Nice! The Japanese had/have a few different shades of Blonde:

BLD - Blonde (more opaque, and what your '86 MIJ '54 Esquire is)
BSB - Butterscotch Blonde (Darker & more transparent)
VNT - Vintage Natural (Clear coat natural look).
OWB - Old or Off White Blonde (think Nocaster Blonde)
USB - US Blonde (a White Blonde finish).

I did a little searching around and found this '86 brochure:
    http://brochures.yokochou.com/guitar-and-amp/fenderjapan/1986/jp_index.html

It would appear to be a "Limited Edition" TES'54-70 with the following specs:
    ¥ 70.000
    Neck: Maple U-Type, 324mm/12.5” Scale
Fretboard: Maple 184mm/7.25” radius Radius, 21 frets
    Pickups: TL-Vintage (USA)
    Controls & Switch: 1V, 1T, 3Way SW
    Bridge: 3 Section Brass Saddle
    Color: BLD

Twang Tone had it right - its BLD Blonde. It shows a white 8 hole pick guard, mine was retrofitted with a black one and it does have 8 holes (which frustratingly don't take a stock Fender guard...)
