I have just very much enjoyed the Mick Ronson documentary by Gary Kemp (Spandau Ballet) on UK Sky Arts. Gary Kemp is a proper teenage Mick fan and does him justice in this unashamedly hero worshipping piece.

There is even some nice footage of his LPB Telecaster as well as Gary getting to play Mick's iconic stripped Les Paul Custom at the current owner's rather posh gaff in the South of France.

If you are in the UK, partial to Mick's work and have Sky Arts, it is well worth a watch.

    Here's a wee taster.

    Well done Gary.

(BTW not a Spandau Ballet fan)

This is on Hulu, and I just watched it on the plane. What a wonderful documentary. I had no idea about the depth of his contributions.

Gary is currently part of Nick Mason’s Saucerful of Secrets ( playing early Floyd).
I saw the Ronson programme a while ago. Gary clearly more than just a pop princess and wrote some amazing songs in Spandau Ballet.

Mick had the coolest looking Les Paul Custom, ever, IMO.

Yeah!! Thanks to this thread, I'm gonna learn that song and then take my LP to my friend's house and play it through his Marshall stack. As God intended:)

When I was starting out on guitar the one song i wanted to learned was 'watch that man'. It's a credit to ronson that his work sounds fresh and dynamic almost 50 yrs later

Loved Ronson's playing. If you haven't heard it before, here's Ian Hunter's tribute song to him:

The neat thing about Ronson was his diversity as a producer. Lou Reed, Morrisey, Ian Hunter,Roger McGuinn and John Mellencamp among others. And he gave John his only Billboard #1 hit.

"Mick was very instrumental in helping me arrange that song, as I'd thrown it on the junk heap. Ronson came down and played on three or four tracks and worked on the American Fool record for four or five weeks. All of a sudden, for 'Jack & Diane,' Mick said 'Johnny, you should put baby rattles on there.' I thought, 'What the **** does put baby rattles on the record mean?' So he put the percussion on there and then he sang the part 'let it rock, let it roll' as a choir-ish-type thing, which had never occurred to me. And that is the part everybody remembers on the song. It was Ronson's idea."

Thanks, I'd seen that a couple of years ago but I wasn't quite ready to cop the Ziggy licks (except for Jean Jeanie, which I abuse regularly).

When I get back to my guitars this evening I'll be working on that D part up the neck. Makes more sense to get a little thicker tone.

BTW, is that a lipstick pickup in the bridge on Ronno's Tele?
