I need a high gain metal distortion pedal (analogue), currently I have a a Boss DS-1 which is great but has the wrong sound for metal, I have a Boss ME-50 which is also great, but the MT-2 model on it has that harshness that Digital distortions seem to get when the gain goes up.

Any recommendations?

It is pricey but I'd love to hear more comments about it.
Other alternatives are mods to the boss metal-zone to take away some of the harshness.
Maybe someone else will chime in.
It's not really my type of music but sometimes it's fun wank away with super amounts of gain.

The HomeBrew Electronics Big D distortion is very flexible and sounds great in every setting I've tried. You can everything from warm overdrive to Marshall crunch to Recto grind.

Hermida Mosferatu!!!!!

This pedal gives me the smoothest, creamiest high gain tone of any dist/overdrive I've ever owned, and I have alot of them. You can dial in a fat, heavy metal tone, or a biting metal tone depending how you set the tone control. My pedal is the double Mosferatu, but the single can be had for about $125. If you want to get really heavy,he has a pedal called the Grinder. Here's a link to his website.

Maybe try a Guyatone Metal Monster I think its got tubes in it and i have heard good reviews or maybe 2 slightly different overdrives (running series or parrallel) along with an EQ pedal.
I used a Distortion Fuzz type pedal (Indyguitarist Blue Fuzz) In parrellel with an SD-1 which got a tight and heavy sound (the blue fuzz keeps high end gain and harmonics and the SD-1 kept the sound thick.
