Just stumbled upon a Mesa Boogie Rocket 4Forty in a local guitar shop and I'm now trying to find some info but it's skimpy at best (and mostly from years ago).

It has 4 10" Jenson speakers, 4 EL84 output tubes, Tremolo and Reverb.

Of course I don't really need another amp, but "want" trumps "need" right? ;)

Any current 4Forty owners out there?

I'm trying to find some specific details on the "Contour" feature. What is it? And what does it do?

Otherwise, does it have good clean and dirt channels? Any problems?

Thanks in advance...

Hi,

I have the Rocket 44 which is the same amp minus the trem and with a 1x12 speaker. The amp has three modes. Clean, overdrive and contour. Contour is the overdrive sound but it has the preset classic Boogie V-shaped curve from their GEQ -- so it boosts top and bottoms and pulls out some midrange. It gives the overdrive sound more focus, more volume and more chunk. The regular OD sound is a fairly midrangey sweet sort of tone. The cleans are pretty nice and you can clip that channel a bit too for nice bluesy stuff. It isn't as shimmery as Fender cleans and the reverb is not very deep. Don't know about the trem as I haven't used that model. The EQ knobs are shared but I have no problem getting a balanced sound for each mode in a live setting.

Mesa publishes the best manuals in the business....full explanation. Note that they use the correct terminology for the Rhythym, Lead and Contour options. Those are modes in a single channel amp.

I love the 440. Probably one of the hands down best sounding amps I've ever used. Someday I'll find another one. I miss mine.

I don't want to carry it around any more, but I'd still like to have one.

Another Rocket 44 user here. I use the clean channel as a platform for pedals, works really well. Would love to try the 440 and see how the trem sounds, haven't ever seen one for sale locally, think of it as a Mesa super reverb with an overdrive channel.

At $599...whoa...that is really cheap for what you are getting (provided it checks out)...They just didn't sell many, but it was really a great amp...I have wanted to get one again over the years. If they break, probably about as much fun to work on as other Mesas with tiered circuit board designs, but Mesas are quite tough in my experience (save the 400+ bass amps, which seemed to have issues often when I was in a band with a guy who had three of them rotating in and out of repair shops).
