Just heard a piece on World Café and wow, just wow. Started recording at 14; brother is the percussionist for Little Feat. Probably best known for this:

It's a brilliant bit of backup singing on an iconic song, though at what cost?

    I love that:
She didn't know who The Stones were.

She was on her way to bed and showed up to the recording wearing hair curlers.

Her voice cracking was unintentional yet arguably gave the whole song its emotional power.

She’s in the 20 Feet From Stardom documentary. Good clips of her performing with her group.

Oh man, the isolated vocals gives me chills. One of the best vocal performances in rock if not the best.

Wiki tells me that she was the Stones' second choice. The first being Bonnie Bramlett of Delaney and Bonnie and Friends. That didn't work out, as husband Delaney forbade her from doing it.

Bobby Whitlock has a bunch of cool youtube videos of him telling stories from his career. He toured with them for a while, and said that everyday, they fought constantly about something.

You're young and hip in London in 1969. You get home from the record store with your copy of Let it Bleed on the day it is released. You put it on the record player....and THIS is what you hear for the first time. I cannot imagine a better experience in recorded music.
