A recent thread here from March 31, 2017 got me to thinking about how many members of Merle's band, "The Strangers", are/were still with us and this is the list that I found on Wikipedia. This list is supposed to include either studio players or actual members of the touring band - I'm not sure how current this list is, unfortunately, but when you look at it you realize just how many musicians that Merle worked with over the years. However, I did not know that Glen Campbell had worked with Merle (probably in the studio)!

    Biff Adams
    Johnny Barber
    Jimmy Belkin
    Eddie Burris
    James Burton
    Glen Campbell
    Eddie Curtis
    Iris DeMent
    Terry Domingue
    George French
    Dennis Hromek
    Joe Manuel
    Abe Manuel
    Will McGregor
    Randy Mason
    Tiny Moore
    Don Markham
    Marcia Nichols
    Bonnie Owens
    Fuzzy Owen
    Ralph Mooney
    Roy Nichols
    Clint Strong
    Gordon Terry
    Jerry Ward
    Bobby Wayne
    Redd Volkaert
    Mark Yeary

Longtime horn player Don Markham died just a few weeks ago. He had retired in 2013 due to dental health issues, and was eventually replaced by Renato Caranto.

Don joined the band in 1974, and my understanding is that during his time with the Strangers, he played on every album Merle recorded.

Steel player Norm Hamlet is by far the senior Stranger at this time.

Dang. I hate to read that about Don. :( I remember seeing Norm on one of the first episodes of Marty Stuart's old RFD-TV show. :)

I just noticed the list contains none of the current lineup, who worked for Merle at the end and now appear with his sons Benny and Noel.

    Norman Hamlet-steel guitar

Jim Christie-drums (formerly with Dwight Yoakum)

    Doug Colosio-keyboards

    Scott Joss-fiddle, mandolin, guitar

    Renato Caranto-saxophone

    Taras Pradaniuk-bass

And of course Ben Haggard on guitar

Iris DeMent? Other than singing "Big City" on a Hag tribute album. I don't see her association with the Strangers.

    I do some Merle, I didn't see my name.

Merle co-wrote with Iris, and cut a couple of her songs, he also once called her the greatest singer in the business. Also the Strangers were the first full band she ever got on stage and sang with, after opening some shows for Merle in the early '90s.
"I got to get up and sing with the Strangers," DeMent beams, like she still can't believe it. "I did 'Big City' and 'Hobo Bill's Last Ride'. And that was the first time I'd been onstage with a full band behind me, and a really good band at that, and I really liked it. That was it for me.

So not really "in" the Strangers lineup per se.
