News came today that Alibaba's Jack Ma, China's richest man, stepped down as chairman. I didn't know until now that he's led a flamboyant guitar life... Just google "jack ma guitar" and you see that he's just like every other rock n' roll wannabee.

    It just gave me chuckles.

My old office's founder and no.1 boss has a huge collection of guitars, especially Les Pauls. Because living in NYC, he would go to the same guitar dealer as G.E. Smith did and buy the same guitars. In company's graphic ad works, he'd photo montage himself playing Les Paul on terraces of fancy Manhattan apartments, overlooking central park, shown as "life style".

Why is guitar the go to thing for men's vanity it seems? Perhaps I only noticed guitar because I play...

I chose guitar when I was young, rocking a bowl cut and still wearing clothes my parents bought me, mainly because I loved the sound. It wasn't until later that I got vain with it.

To attract girls, probably. Little did I know it was actually to fritter all my money on gear.

I just enjoy singing along with other instruments and the guitar only had 6 strings when I was a little boy. Sold me!

My ride at the time was badd*ss.

I think what you are observing is as much 'birds of a feather' versus 'vain men choose guitar'

lots of guys who are vain do not play instruments, they play golf, have sports cars, BOATS, vacation homes, side chicks, art, beer and so on...

we are just a very narrow part of the overall vanity old dude market...

First comes the guitar...then you learn to play it...then you become a god. THEN comes the vanity.

    According to a friend.

I just wish I’d known some of the more subtle signs a girl likes you back then. With hindsight, I realise I was a lot more popular than I thought in my teenage melancholy years. But perhaps they were just after my Tele...

Vanity is fleeting, it soon goes when you have your heart torn out by some floozy, start loosing your hair and need to go up a few sizes in cargo shorts..

    Real men play the sousaphone.
Going back to 1964 and the first day of school band, my choices were myriad. Which instrument to choose? No guitars in marching bands back then. Drums? Already full up. Sousaphone? YES! I loved playing the big horn. Didn't much like marching with that big sucker. I love hearing New Orleans bands with a big horn.
Guitar is a pale second choice.

I think guitars have got to be pretty far down the list.

I think cars, motorcycles, boats, etc.. are all higher up the list.

If it was about impressing women maybe guitar is better.. but you have to be able to play it, and I bet even more so you need to sing as well.

I think some of stuff like cars/motorcycles/boats there are a lot of guys who think those things attract women.. but in reality they just attract other like minded men.

    (Says "Nowadays")

(Includes twenty-three year old song as evidence)

People DJing in 2019 with actual factual vinyl discs (or "platters" as they're called nowadays) tend to be older than that song. Which is almost old enough to get a fair priced rental car from Budget.
