It’s just about a month since I lost my buddy Jackie, and Foxy came home tonight.

The whole family had been discussing how much we missed having a dog around. And how dark it seemed around here without one. We all agreed that while there is no way we could ever replace our best boy, and we all miss him like crazy, it would probably do us all a lot of good to make a new friend.

We started poking around online, looking at rescues in the area, and then stumbled upon this little girl way down in south Texas border country. According to the rescue, she’s a 9-10 month old Carolina Dog mix. It took a little logistical witchcraft to get her here, but she arrived about 10:00 this evening.

Shes definitely still a pup. Loads of puppy behavior. She’s a little confused, and way out of her comfort zone. It’s been a crazy couple days for her on the road. But she’s finally started to settle in and is just the sweetest girl. She has no manners or training to speak of, but in the last few hours she’s already picked up “sit”, “stay”, “leave it”, and “lie down”. Not perfectly every time, but I’m shocked at how quickly she’s learning commands. She’s very treat motivated and VERY eager to please and get praise. And, after a couple small accidents is already going to the door and asking to go outside.

It’s going to be a lot of work to get her even close to where Jackie was. That dog was just unbelievably well behaved and mannered. Foxy is a total loose cannon right now. Just a ball of energy and curiosity. She wants to shove her nose into everything and runs around like a squirrel on speed. She finally chilled out and fell asleep on the floor.

I’m not missing Jackie any less. But this little doggie sure is sweet, and is loads of fun and laughs. We’re in love with her already.

We didn’t pick her name, but it suits her so well we’re sticking with it.

Good on you. In my experience a rescue dog will, realising he/she has been offered a good thing, do everything they can to please you. It’s when they start gently pushing the boundaries that you know they’re truly settled.

What a good dog!

I start looking for a new dog within a few weeks of losing one and our last three were shelter or soon to be sheltered dogs, and all good dogs. I don’t know how I’d get along without one but may find out if our Josie lives as long as I hope!

Happy for you, @Jakedog, but I have to admit your post brought a tear to my eye. We lost our dog, Hopper, almost three years ago. I'm still getting over it. Hopper and Foxy could have come from the same litter. We named her Hopper after one of our favorite artists, Edward Hopper. Our first dog was named Matisse and was such a sweet girl we decided all of our future dogs would be named after artists as well.

The ironic thing is Hopper was found walking up the street by our neighbors. They decided they couldn't take in a dog at that point, so we got Hopper. But before that happened, their teenage daughter decided to call her...Foxy.

Happy for you, Jakedog...and happy you found each other by whatever means.

Best wishes for the bonding and settling in process. Pups can run you ragged but there are sure to be some laughs involved too, and memories made.

Congratulations! It took me a bit longer to adopt another furry pal after Toto left me, but if you're a dog guy, you're just a dog guy! To me it seems like you just have to have one around!

Your Foxy looks like my grand doggie's sister. My daughter had lost her little dog she had given a home for fourteen years. One day, Coco just showed up at her door, she was still a pup. A search never turned up the owner, so I guess providence sent Coco my daughter's way. She's been with my daughter now for around eleven years.
