Hey guys! This is my first post... I'm sure this has been done here before, but this video is my attempt at playing all three solos that the masterful Brent Mason played on Alan Jackson's "I Don't Even Know Your Name".

My friend told me that Brent recorded these solos on his FIRST TAKE. He asked to record a couple more passes to have a couple options, and they ended up using the first passes. What an amazing player...

Thanks for watching!

That's pretty rad man!

Country guitar lead stuff is foreign to me. I keep expecting the left hand to be all spaghetti fingered out, and it isn't. I guess there's a whole range of technique that I know nothing about. I would love to learn it too as I love taking different styles of guitar and mashing them together...

Haha yeah man! it always amazes me to watch great players play super fast runs with seemingly no effort. I got my degree in Jazz Guitar before moving to Nashville to focus on Country stuff, and I see the similarity between great Jazz players and great Country pickers. George Benson and Pat Martino can play screaming fast lines with such a cool, natural attitude, just like Brent Mason and Albert Lee. So inspiring!

I can play some pretty haulin butt rock and roll solos and I have pretty big hands which helps me cover lots of frets. But I've seen footage and my hands look like they are all over the place.

I need to get a good dvd instructional video and learn some stuff as I really really love stuff like Junior Brown ,Gatton...etc i would love to throw a total country style ass on fire solo with my own particular drunken sailor style in some songs.

just to clarify, I'm not a metal player! lol, more like stoner rock and Hilltop Blues... with a bit of Chicago style punk thrown in.

they are on you tube, but the video quality is pretty lousy and without the material, you end up having to squint and rewind over and over. Gotta pick em up on ebay or something i reckon.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure the Gatton Hot Licks are out of print (May be wrong about that?). It may be wrong, but I ended up torrenting them to get in on some of that knowledge. What a beast Gatton was! man..

Gatton was a beast and a heuckuva good guy too.
I've got his hotlicks DVD which is actually my 2nd copy cuz I wore the first one out.
I just bot it at GC last year, so it's still in print. I have B. Mason's DVD too and both are good to own. For me, I had to watch them many times each to get much from them, but eventually paid off. I think the more advanced you are, the more you benefit from them.

They also give you a bar to shoot for, which I'm still nowhere near. But I still watch the DVD's semi regularly.

Very cool. I bought Johnny Hiland's Hot Licks DVD, and that's got some great material on it as well! For me, transcribing solos is a great way to get new ideas as well as finding new ways to get around on the neck.

Here's another video of my transcription of Jim "Moose" Brown's live solo on Dan Seals' "Headin West"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nHffpKqyMFo

My buddy Moose has played on countless sessions with Brent Mason (and everyone else) as a piano/keys player here in Nashville. He's also a Grammy winning songwriter, and producer. I knew he was an incredibly talented guy, but then I saw a video of him tearing up the guitar with an artist named Dan Seals. So, on top of being a top level keys player, song writer and producer, he also rips the guitar harder than a lot of dedicated guitar players I know in town. Ridiculous!

Here's the original video I transcribed from:
