I don't eat at McD's but I do grab a coffee there every once in a while. Shortly after they put the kiosks in our local McD's I stopped in at about 6am to grab a coffee. No one was in the place. I went up to the counter to order and I was told I had to order at the kiosk. In the amount of time it took her to say that, she could have poured my coffee. So I left.

So if you want human interaction, you have to go to the drive-through now?

never mind, my response could have been construed as a political comment. I will err on the side of boring.

I've worked through the machines for sport, but would rather order from a person.

I saw a work through on the average Mcdonalds profitability a day or two ago, and it involves something like (I'm sure I'm butchering this) $150K profit from 2.7MM of revenue (as well as a huge liquid cash outlay. The opportunity cost of the capital for an investor would be about 1/3rd-1/2 of the average profit.

Every cent counts, and if they can take two cashiers out and the associated benefits (two for a week is probably 6 people over the whole week), one would guess that's worth near six figures in labor costs (figure someone making $9 an hour has benefits and other state-mandated costs that would bring the hourly amount to about $15)

    15 hours a day
    7 days a week
    2 cashiers
    $15 an hour total cost
    52 weeks a year

$163,800 - probably on the high side a little?

I wonder how much the kiosks cost. They're probably not cheap the first year.

Plus, they'll have to add back a staff of 1 to man them so that all of the older folks don't stop coming in.

If I walked into a McD's like the OP did here and they said they don't have a choice, I'd probably have told them I was eating somewhere else. I should have the choice as a consumer - the cashier may be obligated to tell me they have to try to get me to go to the kiosk.

It's inevitable. You're walking into what is basically a giant vending machine. Money in, food out. They'll get the technical kinks ironed out soon enough. Before you know it, most fast food chain restaurants will be open 24 hours and staffed by a small handful of low skilled workers who pretty much just mop the floors, empty the trash, and clear the food making machines when they jam.

You're really better off avoiding the garbage they pass off as "food" from Mc D's, Carl's, Jack in the Box, etc.....but if you need a fat and salt fix, a burger from any local mom 'n pop charbroiler is usually far superior...and you support a local business.

I noticed some supermarkets by me offering pre-sliced cold cuts and a minimally staffed deli counter. I don't mind a kiosk to order my food, but at least slice it to order!

Sort of like letting 100 strangers handle your food without benefit of employee hand washing requirements.

I saw that article, or one just like it. It was within a week of my first McD visit in about five-ten years. I ordered from the kiosk, which was a frustrating experience. By the time I got to the counter, five people who came in behind me walked up to the register, ordered, and got their food before I got mine.

I truly like a sausage mcmuffin with egg, great sandwich, but I'm done with McD for life. No more chances.

Maybe if they start passing out rubber gloves...

What about showing up in a Level 3 Hazmat suit, like you're swabbing the place for Ebola? I'm sure McDo's will make a deal that you can order from the counter instead.

I use them. I just key in my order and sit down and read while my order's being fouled up. It does irritate me that the kiosk doesn't improve order accuracy. They still don't remember drinks or the sweet and sour for the grandkids' nuggets. But, I've got such low expectations of McDonalds to begin with that I just live with it.

I know it’s bad karma but I just pull my hands up my coat sleeves so they look, uh... not there and then they have to do everything.

Then I just *pop* them out when it’s time to pay !

    Problem solved ! ;)

About this " eewww the touchscreen is soooo filthy..."

Don't you wash your hands after using it and before eating? AFAIK, money is pretty filthy, too...
