The concept has been around a very long time. Someone has built a neat, compact version with the jack spacing to conveniently plug into the pre-amp out/power amp in jacks on Blues Deluxe, Deville and the Hot Rod versions.
It's just an audio pot. It will do what it promises to and there is zero chance of hurting the amp. Earlier versions of this, most home made, were built in a small box and used short guitar pedal jacks to reach the two amp sockets I mentioned. You can't go wrong if you buy this.

Yes it works. It is like using a Volume Pedal in the Preamp Out / Power Amp In or in an Effect Loop.

I made one in a small box with two jacks and two patch cable for my Fender Hot Rod Deville of the first generation
with the normal channel volume being too sensitive.

I even made one compact like in your post but it is very complicated to get the exact spacing between the 2 plugs.

Here is the schematic if you want to try.
