I saw Marty and his Fabulous Superlatives for the first time last night. The show was filmed at a 250 seat theatre/museum named for Katharine Hepburn (who was a resident of the town) as part of a PBS series airing in the spring. A friend of a friend had 2 front row balcony seats and couldn’t go so we jumped on it!

They didn’t disappoint although they had to stop about a minute into their opening instrumental due to tuning issues (it has been unseasonably frigid here the past few days) and restart it. They then did it again at the end of the show at the producer’s request. Stellar playing by all, though, and I was blown away by their harmonies.

Marty played the Clarence Tele, what appeared to be a Martin acoustic and a mandolin I don’t know the make of. He had a black guard Tele that wasn’t used. Kenny played what looked to be a silver sparkle Brad Paisley Tele and a Fireglo Rick 370-12 that was the thickest sounded 12 string I’ve ever heard. I definitely will jump at a chance to see them again.

It would have been great to see it. He's a great performer and I really like that he smiles. A lot. Too many performers look like they're not at all enjoying what they're doing. He obviously likes it. Glad you could go!

Awesome. I could have gotten front row tix for next Saturday but it's not in the cards. Glad that I may get to see the show on PBS. I did see him a short time ago on the Sweethearts of the Rodeo tour. Absolutely great show.

Seen Marty & the band twice, Chris & Kenny separately, and Chris separately again. Some of this in the same week. ;)

What they're doing is their life's work, and they're doing a fine job of it.

I wanted to see the Sweethearts show but I think it was in Boston on a weeknight. Unfortunately my 20’s were a long time ago and it would’ve killed me the next day!

Could it have been an Esquire?

Could be. It was hard to tell from my seat and the strap was draped over the face of the guitar.

The blackguard was probably Mick Ronson's 52 Esquire. We've been fortunate enough to have seen Marty/FS 6 times in the past 5 or 6 years. Marty would play the Esquire for the encore of Hillbilly Rock, tuned down a half step I believe.
Glad you were able to see the show. They're the best!

A rare case of truth in advertising: that band really is superlative.

I'm so jealous! For whatever reason, I've never been able to make it to a Marty Stuart show. Plus, I used to live right there in Old Saybrook, just a stone's throw from where Kate Hepburn's family home was. When I was maybe 6 or 7 years old I remember seeing her buying corn from the farmer's stand across the street from my mom's jewelry store. Of course I had no idea who she was till my mother told me later, but I recall her saying hello to me and asking if I liked corn on the cob.

They were awesome last night, as usual.

I NEVER KNEW Marty had a Martin acoustic with a B-Bender in it!!! What a cool sound!
I actually dig that idea even more than a bender in a tele! What a unique sound on the acoustic!

Kenny had some kind of box sitting on top of his DR, that had 2 tubes sticking out of it... not sure what it was, a preamp of some kind? Tremolo for the surf tunes? I always wondered why a lot of these pros (Kenny isn't the only one- Guthrie Trapp is another example) who play the Fender BF amps (that have GREAT reverb and trem onboard), have reverb and/or trem pedals on their pedalboards... (Kenny had a Malekko Spring reverb on his board, easy to spot because it's bubble gum pink)
